I usually file my foreign-earned income tax as "married, filing separately". DH isn't a citizen and doesn't earn anything in the US, so he doesn't have to file anything. We also have separate bank accounts.
We'll be in the US for the second half of this year and will need to get health insurance. We were told that to be counted as a "household" we should file taxes jointly.
Does this sound reasonable?
Also, anyone with a non-citizen H file jointly before?
I'm not sure what effect your filing status has on your ability to buy HI. I know you have to file jointly in order to qualify for the premium tax credit. I'm not sure if the tax credit is something you're planning on or not though:
