How big? I have a 46 inch in my 17x12 living room. It's okay. It would be nice to be bigger in some ways, but in other ways, the living room isn't JUST for watching TV, so I don't always want it to be the focal point.
If I had a separate family room/theater room, I'd go bigger.

Our tv/media room is 16 x 20. We have a 32" tv and that's ok by us. You should really base the size of the tv on how far away from it your sofa/chair/viewing area is.

We have a 46 or 47" TV and are about 6-8 feet from it and it seems right. I wanted a 32" TV, but DH convinced me to upgrade one size b/c we would eventually move into a larger place where we could keep the TV in a TV room and not the main living room. Now that we have a basement family room, I'm glad, but I was annoyed when that was in our main living room in our tiny house before. I used to turn on the "fireplace" view when people were over b/c it felt big in our tiny living room.
Our living room is around 17'x20', and we have a 60". We are a very TV/movie centric family, and enjoy the big picture.
My neighbor jokes that he thinks about calling me to have me change the channel to sports when he is out front watching the kids ride their bikes, since he has such a good view from his driveway. I can see their TV through their sidelights, and their TV isn't even in their front room.
We have 2 large rooms with TVs and they're both only 36 inches. We don't care that much about TV and the bit we do love no one cares (Like my 3.5 year old cares how great the picture is or what size Daniel Tiger is..ha).
My sister has a giant 60plus inch TV in her LR but they're big on TV/sports/movies so it works for them.
I know there's rules about this and room size, but I'd base it off what you want. I don't a 90 inch TV in my LR just to watch the 5pm news.

I think it depends less on the size of the room, and more on how far from the TV the seating will be. We have a larger living room, and our current TV is 48in. It's small for how far the couch is from it, but DH hung it high in hopes of getting a 68in TV to replace it with in the near future. I really don't care on the size, either way. I mainly use the TV to play pandora.
Our family room is about 18 x 20 but completely open to our kitchen and morning room. We didn't plan to buy a bigger tv when we moved but our 54" old tv looked small above our fireplace. So we went with 65" and love it. It would probably be excessive if the room was enclosed but since we are often looking at it from the kitchen, it's great. (Also we are getting the built in for the other side installed next week. Just so anyone doesn't look at this and think wtf is going on with that!)
13x17 room with a 55" tv. Since we have an open concept main floor and can see the tv from the breakfast room and kitchen too, I think it is a good size.
