Our fifth anniversary is next month and the traditional gift is wood (*insert Michael Scott joke here*).
MH has mentioned wanting some kind of fruit tree in our yard. We don't have green thumbs and I don't know what, if anything, would grow in our climate in April (North Jersey). I'll visit a nursery and ask, but in the meantime is there any kind of fruit tree that we won't kill right away? Around $200 or less?
My other idea is to adopt a tree or donate to an organization that plants/preserves trees? Any recommendations for a reputable organization? The Redwood Forest Foundation says that $100 would get me 10 redwoods but that seems a little too good to be true. The NJ Tree Foundation will plant one 5-6' tree in Newark for $100, and we're in the Newark area so it's nice to do something local. Any other suggestions?

Could you have an indoor fruit tree? Meyer dwarf fruit trees are available and could work and they can be moved outdoors in the spring/summer:
