This brought to you by my mom emailing me this morning and saying, "I talked to the new neighbor today and he works at H's company, but I don't know what H does. On second though, I don't know what you do."

Yeah they do. Although h is sometimes like Chandler. I know what he does kinda but can't explain it. So it's the same for our parents. My in-laws know what we do too.

I would say no. I don't think most people know what I do unless they work or have worked in the industry. I've tried to explain it, but it sounds a lot different than it actually is. It involves a lot of what seems administrative, but there is more to it than that, and that stuff is really hard to explain.
They know what James does, because it's obvious. "See that scaffold on that building? James builds that stuff."
My family yes. H's family they get the simplified explanation which is about 10% of my job. H's family gets hung up on "your degree doesn't directly correlate with your job".
Sort of? My mother hasn't cared to visit my office in the 7 years I've been here whenever she's in town (at least she's stopped complaining that she doesn't get to have lunch with me when MIL does). My job is weird and hard to explain succinctly.

My mom and my MIL both know that my H is an engineer, but they couldn't tell you exactly what he does. FIL is also an engineer, so he could. My dad is the sales manager for the company and he probably doesn't really "get" what H does, he just sells the products he designs.
I'm a whole other issue. I'm sure that none of the four could really tell you what I do. I'm not sure that H could explain it really well, either. Hell, some days I'm not really sure, myself, exactly how to phrase my job.
This is true for me too! I think my parents would have an easier time telling people what H does than telling them what I do. They know what I do in a VERY general sense, but I work in a pretty niche field so if people asked for more detail or they would just give a blank stare. H even has a hard time explaining what I do.
H's parents really have no idea what I do. Nor have they ever really asked or been interested.
