Really, I would just give it a couple of washes before doing anything. Color usually fades.
Back in the 90s, my stylist used a cap to do my highlights (my hair was short at the time) and would use crochet hook to pull the pieces through. Why can't they just add some highlights to lighten it up?

Thats what I have ended up doing in the past. But highlights never looked good on my darkish brunette hair. I ALWAYS ended up going to a solid color and living with it. This time they didnt even suggest highlights. Besides, I dont wanna pay more $$$ for it.
