Stan How hard is it to change MOS's? H is really frustrated with his unit and considering trying to change MOS from MP to Motor T. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks!
Switching his MOS will depend greatly upon his state. In my old state (Illinois) I was able to switch my MOS from common to MP because I deployed with them so they sent me to school. In PA, where I ETSed from, you have to find an open slot, get the unit to accept your transfer. Then you get your current commander to let you transfer and once the lateral transfer is complete, you reclass. Some things to consider, if he is an NCO it can be harder to switch. Units don't like to put non MOS qualified people into slots (especially NCO slots) because it messes with their numbers and states get really pissy and start asking why you have so many non MOSQ. Also, switching MOSes can mess with promotion. In Illinois you can change your MOS for promotion consideration. So I sat in a 25U slot but asked for consideration for a 31B slot. Then once I got my promotion and slot, I changed my primary MOS. When I became eligible for E6 I had to switch back to 25U because there was more promotion potential than as an MP. PA doesn't let you do that. They make you laterally transfer in your current grade, switch your MOS and then you make the next years list.
So, while it's possible, he should look into his states policies and consider long term promotion potential. I can clarify stuff if needed. I'm sick and fighting a cranky toddler.

Thank you both so much! I hate that I keep bothering you with these questions, but you're helpful lol. H is at work tonight and has drill this weekend, so we'll see if he makes any progress.
I don't mind! I miss being an NCO so any help I can provide makes me happy to do so. I don't check in often but Stan and several others know where to find me.
