We've been having a lot of fires lately here from the heat but usually they are far away in the hills not close to residential areas. I just took this picture from outside my house.
Update from the base says the fire department is on it. I hope they get it under control soon.
Cheese - were you here when we had the big fires that burned thru the base to the ocean?? I remember driving home from work that day over the base and both sides of the freeway were on fire. It was nuts and super scary. I hope they get it out soon. Do you still have power??
Cheese, you are stationed at Pendleton? DH's firm had a company party on base (beachfront) last year. I guess the former base commander is brother to one of the partners or something along those lines. Y'all throw a hell of a bash. We still talk about it.
I hope you all are okay down there. I remember vividly being at my grandma's house and watching the hills burn when I was a kid. It was eerie.

That fire was horrendous. We were in 29 Palms at the time Camp Pendleton and Miramar were sending people our way for shelter.
We really need some rain down here ASAP. I'm getting nervous about fire season.
I was there when it happened in 2003. I lived in East County, and the fire got within 1/2 mile of my house. My ship went out for the week the morning the fires started, but there were so many people affected, they made a special trip back to port so we could check on our families. My neighbors told me that they had been able to hear a single firetruck fighting the fire along the main street. It was mind-boggling how much land was blackened; I'd try to tell people that it was as far as you could see for 360*, but I know they thought I was exaggerating.
