Are these things really as safe as a car seat? it says you can use them starting at age 3. It looks like it is just used in Europe now. I have no desire to use them, just find them kind of fascinating. I was looking through my car manual and saw that there used to be an option in my car that had built in restraints like this, so I wondered about that too. @fivedogs.
We're trying to decide between this and Immi Go's (http://immigoseat.com) for DHs car once baby #3 is here. DH has a Jetta, and there's no way we can safely fit 3 across without getting one of these kinds of things. I'd love to hear Fivedogs opinion on either of these!
We used this when I took DD to Argentina at age 3 in 2011. The only car we needed to ride in was to/from the airport on that end (took public transportation in NY), but it's over an hour-long ride. This thing was not a hit with DD. It's hot and uncomfortable.
On the safety front, however, it did seem to do the same thing that I see boosters now do for her- make it so that the car seat's existing belt was at the right level to restrain her. Nonetheless, a safety feature is completely useless if your kid does not want to use it.
This looks great for travel. Too bad DD will only be 2.5 when we go to Europe, so we will have to rent a seat there.
Where are you going? I am traveling seatless to Europe this summer. All of the cities we're visiting having public transportation connections from the airport/train stations.

Most likely Tuscany, so we will have to rent a car to get between the hill towns.
