My son wants to have his birthday party at a lazer tag place. We aren't well off and i'm having a hard time swallowing the thought of spending $400.00 on a birthday party for an 8 year old (that would be the base package, plus pizza and cake). I was thinking of inviting his four closest friends to go to lazer craze for his birthday, but not buying an actual birthday package. I would pay for all the kids to play lazer craze and use the bounce houses (about 125.00) but wouldn't get a party room. I don't think i can use the table area without buying the package, but if I could I would bring a cake. I am pretty friendly with his friends parents if that makes a difference.
Is this tacky? I personally wouldn't think anything of it as a parent if my child got invited to something like this, but i was talking to another mom a few years ago who said she went to a party where a mom did this and she thought it was awful. Alternatively i'm going to try to convince my son to do something at home, and tell him we'll bring a friend to play lazer tag this summer for fun.

Do it. My sister did that for her birthday one year. My mom even scheduled it at a time to take advantage of a deal - $10 for an armband that gave you unlimited play. After that everyone went back to their house for cake and ice cream. My sister is gluten and dairy free, so she couldn't have gotten a birthday package with food anyways.
