I have an exergen. It's the first one they came out with though and it's not always consistent, which drives me crazy. Maybe the newer ones are better? It's what my pedi's office uses.
I bought a Braun no-touch forehead one from amazon and it was even worse! It kept giving really high readings when my kids only had a low-grade fever. I tried to return it but amazon doesn't take returns on thermometers.
I have an Exergen Temporal too but switched to an ear one as soon as the kids were old enough. I never thought the Exergen was correct (although it seems to be based on ear readings...IDK but I never trusted it). If you want to try it out, I'd be happy to sell it for way less than retail. (It's clean, nothing yucky to get on it and can be sanitized with a quick wipe with alcohol).
I've got one similar to Ashley&Scott and it's all I've needed. I go under the arm. Nearly 4 years in, I've never taken a rectal temp and I'm sure not starting now.
I have a Braun forehead one that works pretty well.
I really like my Braun forehead too. I got it after DD chewed through my oral one. Worth the pricetag. It may not be as accurate as some other methods but my kid's don't fight it either, so it's probably not that far off. It got me within a couple tenths of a degree with DSs high fever so I trust it enough to know it gets me close. In 3.5 years I have only taken a rectal temp once and that was 2 weeks ago with DS and I made my MIL do it. No thanks.
No rec because I'm just using a cheap rectal thermometer. I still can't figure out the Exergen one. It always says his temp is like 70 degrees
We had the same issue with really low temps when we first got the Exergen one. It took us an embarrassingly long time to realize there was a cap on it. Once we took that off, we haven't had an issue (except that I somehow managed to switch it to C instead of F and can't figure out how to get it to go back, but that doesn't bother me too much yet).

LOL. We did that too. Now DS reminds us to remove the cap every time we use it
We DS was an infant we used the one that the hospital gave us. It did not give quick readings, though, and so it was near impossible to do once he became more active. The SpeedRead one sounds much better.
I have the temporal one as well and it's quick and easy. When P was in the hospital she had a brief encounter with the NICU due to one high temp reading. After that they told us to get the temporal and check if she ever felt warm. She runs warm as it is so I check it often but she's not yet run a fever. I verified the first few with a rectal temp and it was within a half a degree each time.
Oh! I have a regular one (the one I used for temping while TTC). I can just use that under his arm? This would be my ideal (and the most MM) solution! SallySparrow @tokenhoser Ashley&scott
I don't see why not...it might be a pain if it takes a long time to read though.

Ha, yes you can just use that one. I got a speed read one because getting ds to sit there long enough for it to beep on our other one is impossible. We also have a an exergen temporal one, and we have a little vicks rectal one that I used one when he was a baby and he was sick in the middle of the night and the nurse's line wanted a rectal temp.
I have the Exergen but feel like it doesn't do accurate. Maybe their head needs to be bigger? I have a cheapy under the arm one that I took home from the NICU and that's what I always do. I cannot bring myself to do rectal.
