My pedi was always clear that with BF'ing exclusively there may sometimes be very little output, especially if the kiddo is in the middle of a growth spurt. DS once went 7 days without pooping and there was no concern (from the pedi... I however was freaking out). The blowout on day 7 was epic and DH had to handle it, LOL.
I don't know if the same applies to formula fed babies, but there's an anecdote for you.
/well, my 1-3 month old DD2 regularly went 7-9 days, before she finally started going more regularly. Doctors agreed it was fine, unless she seemed uncomfortable, which she typically started to by around a week We did prune juice a couple times, and a suppository a couple times, but not until a week had passed with no poop. So, I wouldn't worry about 2-4 days, unless he seems particularly uncomfortable.
There is no one right answer in terms of number of days but the range of normal is wide, as people have said. Just go by his symptoms--if he is relatively happy, his belly feels pretty soft, he is eating normal amounts and making the same number of wet diapers, and passing gas he is just fine. Especially if you know he has gone days at a time in the past without going then this sounds like normal for him (for now).
I'll 2nd everything everyone else has said. I just had my well visit and dr said 7-9 days while breastfed. For formula if they seem constipated then add some prune juice to the formula around day 6 or 7.
My 8 month old combo fed baby has gone 9 days without a dirty diaper. The nurse practitioner said it was ok as long as he wasn't uncomfortable. When he seemed to be (day 9) we did the pediatric glycerin suppository. (Sp?)

we had a big shift in dirty diapers right around starting solids. so if your ds is new to eating foods, his system might just be figuring things out.
my ds went 7 days w/o pooping after starting solids. and once he got going again the poops were really....different. more solid, so smelly, thick paste-like.
sorry! just want to warn you! i had no idea the poop would change so much. and his farts would clear a room for awhile during this transitional time (lol). It didn't last long though, once his body got adjusted he started pooping more regularly again.
