My extended family is considering places for a summer 2016 reunion and this is a possibility. We have to be somewhere within driving distance of family in NC and want beach. Outer Banks is too quiet for some and Myrtle has been nixed (though I would happily go there!)
So, what's hiltonhead like? We will have about 20 people ranging from toddler to in their 70s. We aren't golfers. Just want a nice beach, options of things to, some shops and good for kids.
If anyone has ideas of condo complexes where we could rent 3-4 condos on the beach, that would be a bonus!
We have been to HHI many times. It is fairly quiet but a bit more going on than Outer Banks. Beaches are nice, wide variety of food, great bike trails. The usual mini golfing, dolphin cruises. It is very relaxing and not crazy commercialized like Myrtle - but still a tourist destination if that makes sense.
I grew up in Hilton Head. It's definitely golf-centric, but there are lots of other things to do, too.
If you're looking for condos together, I'd recommend something on South or North Forest Beach. Hilton Head is very non-commercial, so there aren't a ton of condos on the beaches. They're all a couple blocks or more inland. It might be cheaper to rent a beach front property big enough for your entire family, if that's possible. Most of those houses have private pools, too, which is nice when you don't want to deal with the hassle of toting everything down to the beach.

It's funny, I grew up going to HHI every year and no one in my family golfs, so I never really considered it a "golf" place- not to take away from muppetinma, who obviously knows the island far far better than I do - just to reinforce there's a lot to do there other than golf.
It's especially great for kids. I have so many fond memories of the Shelter Cove, Sea Pines Village, going out on boats for shrimping and crabbing, biking around the island, fireworks and folk singers, hermit crab races, and stuffing our faces with hush puppies.
