I use loose to set my undereye concealer. It's not that messy once you get the hang of it, and pressed just can't set it as well for some reason. But after I apply loose at home, I carry pressed in case of any nose shine issues.

I prefer pressed for the mess/waste issue, but I'll use both.
If you want a great pressed powder foundation, I used MAC Studio Fix for years, and I love it. It's probably too heavy to use as a powder on top of foundation, though.
I'm sure you've already considered the Hourglass Ambient Light powders (or whatever they're actually called)?
Loose powder all the way. I pick up a small amount on my brush and swirl it around in the lid for a moment to get it evenly distributed on my brush before I start applying it. I'm not a big fan of a fully matte face and a light dusting of loose powder takes the edge of any potential shininess.

I use loose every day. I can see it being messy if you use a big brush to apply it- yeah, no way I'm dealing with that. I have no loose powder mess because I don't apply it with a brush, I use a velour round. Same as the one I used for pressed powder, except for loose powder I used a bigger, thicker, more luxurious one. I carry pressed powder for shine touch-ups.

I use a velour puff too. Because I use it around my eyes, I need a more precise applicator than a big brush. I can definitely see a brush making more of a mess.

Exactly. Brushes can be messy with powder eyeshadow too. Sometimes a sponge applicator is cleaner.

I don't think I've found a powder I love, really. I remember reading some article that stated most powders don't match your skin as well as foundation (well...except if you have powder foundation, I guess), so you should apply very lightly, to take off the shine.
I have some MUAC pressed powder and Tarte loose powder. They seem to get the job done, but I guess of all my products, this is one where I might go cheaper.
I thought of this thread when this happened earlier today. That's some of my fancy Bobbi Brown loose powder all over my jeans because this is what happens when you snatch a jar of loose powder without realizing the lid isn't screwed on all the way. :-(
I use both. I like a lose powder to mattify my makeup when I'm finished. I like using my Mac compact when I want just a little coverage over my tinted moisturizer.
