I have and use both. My skin is very dry so if I brush loose powder over my foundation to set it, the powder can cause my skin to look flaky and dull. Usually if I'm using loose powder, a shake a bit into the container lid and then use a barely damp Beauty Blender to press it on to the areas I want to set on my face. The loose powder is more translucent than my pressed powder.
I'll use pressed powder with a sponge to pat it on to areas the same way.

I prefer loose, but use pressed more often because it is easier and faster. I have 1 loose and 2 pressed that I use depending on late I am running in the morning.
If you are looking for just one powder, I realize this post is not helpful.
Loose powder is such a ridiculous mess to use, although Bare Minerals has a great cap system that really limits loss.
I honestly don't know which I prefer in terms of performance. In either case I can wind up with powdery old lady face if I'm not careful, and I don't find that one controls my shine better than another.

So there is my non-answer. LOL
I co-sign this non-answer.
The upshot of this stance is that I avoid loose powder because I don't find any real benefits over pressed, and the mess gets on my nerves. I have some bare minerals assorted loose powders from a preMUT gift set. I hadn't even used most of them beyond opening them and spilling them all over the place on the first try until recently. I did used to like the mineral veil, but that's because I hadn't really tried anything else.

I'm wary of loose powders. The potential for mess, for my daughter to dump everything out, for me looking like crust, or for me to think I've affixed the lid properly and toss in my make up case and find everything covered in powder.
So, I stay in the pressed powder camp. Honestly, the first time I even bought powder was last year. I have HG Luminous, and I just got the HG palette.

I prefer loose powder, it is one of the few items makeup wise that I cheap out on. Right now I am using a Physcians Formula Mineral loose powder, I used a big IT brush to put it on with to set my foundation. I have used the Ulta brand loose mineral finishing powder a lot as well.
Any recs? I was using UD but it always looked off. Settled into poors, looked generally cakey, etc. I don't need a full powder foundation, but a hint of color is nice so I can wear it stand alone to Home Depot on the weekends or something.
I generally prefer loose, but I do keep pressed on hand for when I'm in a hurry or for travel. I use the BareMinerals foundations and powders for both.

I've only tried it in the store, but the Laura Mercier pressed powder foundation was really nice.

I just got this about a month ago, and have been really happy with it, both as a setting powder or on its own (though it's light coverage at best). It doesn't settle into my pores. link

For an easy cheapie, I do Rimmel Stay Matte pressed. It's only $4 (I get it at Target) and great for the price, imo.

Pressed, which is why even though I love my Pumpkin and Poppy powders, I went ahead and ordered the HG ambient palette. Not only am I a klutz like Pixy, I do my makeup in the car most workdays and trying to put on loose powder without dumping it all over the car is a pain. And the excess gets everywhere. The whole drivers side of my car looks like a fairy sneezed there.
