On the contouring thing - I think that what makes it NOT work for me is when it becomes a thing. When it requires twenty minute tutorials. When you look like a Kardashian at a (b-list) gala when you're done.
Contouring as an everyday thing (for us...less contoured ones) is the same as a sweep of mascara or a quick dab of lip stick/stain/gloss/whatever your go-to thing is.
I don't have a contouring routine. There's no big thing. It's like how I contour my crease with a deeper color - it's a quick, blended swipe of color where I need it to pretend I'm not a perfect circle.
So, longwinded - I can't get on contouring as a trend. For me, it's a wee little quick part of my makeup, like adding a deeper color in my outer V is when doing my eyeshadow.
I can't say I've done any contouring, but when I went to the Benefit counter to get some Erase Paste, the sales lady showed me how to apply it to all the spots on my face that I wanted to camouflage a little. It looked great, but I have no desire to do that every day! I'll put on some tinted moisturizer or some BB cream and set it with some powder. At some point I'll oil right through it, but I don't care enough to keep applying.
Nars Orgasm didn't work with my skin tone. It was like I had a neon sign on my face. Cat eyes don't work on me, probably because I have hooded lids, and where the upper and lower lids meet at the outer corner of my one eye don't line up, so the lines don't come out straight. I wish I could find a matte red lipstick, I just haven't been brave enough to commit to one. Eyebrow threading. I don't know why it doesn't work for me. Maybe the ladies I've gone to aren't used to fair hair? Also, they didn't seem to be very good at shaping, and since I can do my own brow touch-ups, I'm not going to pay someone to do that for me.
ETA: Also, eyeshadow palettes. It seems like there are a few colors that get used up, but more than half don't really get used. I'll just stick to my MAC shadows.
Nose contouring. I actually hate nose contouring, especially on people of color. If you're ethnic nose is so bad that you want to make it look white and European, then stay away from me.
I also can't do the over lined lip look. I don't want to try it either.
Orgasm isn't my thing either.
I struggle with lower lash line shading. Mine creases within minutes usually and I feel like I look like I got punched.
I feel like you're my WOC twin. ALL of this.
Except Orgasm. But I've never been able to get it to work on my own. When a MUT does it, it looks fabu.
Also: most primers. I love Benefit 15-hour primer for special occasions, but find it too drying for everyday use. Just about everything else I've tried feels like I've coated my face in . . . something that doesn't breathe. Silicone? Plastic?

Dark liner on the lower lash line. It makes my eyes look smaller and melts away in spots. It looks awful on me.
I have oily skin and can't do any BB, CC or tinted moisturizer creams. They look awful on me within an hour.
As for contour, I do it daily. I just run bronzer gently under my cheekbones. It accentuates them more and I love the look. A bit by the hairline and jawline. Blend blend blend and it looks great.
I also don't like any shade of range ice shadow. I just don't get it.
I wish I could pull off dark lipstick. I love the look, but it looks so bad on me.

I know exactly what you mean. I went on a primer hunt a while back and worked my way through tons of samples. Try CoverFX, the dry skin formulation by Smashbox, the MUFE one, or the Nars radiant one. None of those have that plastic feel and they are more moisturizing than Benefit.
The thing I can't do is an all matte eye. Or at least, not while I have my glasses on. I look like a zombie. Winged eyeliner too.
Eyeshadow primer does nothing for me. I can't figure out what it supposed to do. Keep my eyeshadow in place? Keep it from fading throughout the day? Whatever it's supposed to do - I can't tell a difference when I've used it vs when I haven't. And I've tried several different ones.
I just think of it as a base to make applying shadows easier. And 99% of time I use a cream shadow, not a primer primer.

It's designed to prevent creasing. It can also give less pigmented shadows more color pop.

Every time I see a photo of nose contouring, I immediately think of Barbie. I don't think it looks natural or flattering. It looks very plastic to me.
I wish I could find a matte red lipstick, I just haven't been brave enough to commit to one.
MAC Russian Red! or Ruby Woo!
the difference...
Here's the deal with reds... ANYBODY can wear red, you just need to find the right red... blue toned, orange toned, neutral... and this is something where my usual drugstore-makeup-loving self will tell you to head to the nearest department store and slide on up to the Chanel counter. Because the nice people at Chanel know their red lipsticks. Let them help you find a red that works for you, buy it, and learn from them.
THEN go to the drugstore and get some more that have the same characteristics (in terms of undertones, etc)... but different finishes, different sheerness levels.
One of my favorite red lipsticks is from the drugstore, and I love it because it's super sheer, it's a wearable anywhere day red... Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in Candy Apple:
it's a great gateway drug of a red.
Once you know what you're looking for, beyond MAC and Chanel, some brands to consider:
NYX Matte... they have a really good looking red, called Pure Red:
they have another darker, bluer red, called Perfect Red:
Yet another who can't wear Nars Orgasm. I've lately even thought Deep Throat was too peachy and have been wearing something from sephora brand.
Contouring scares me - it seems like it would be fine in my bathroom but out in the sun it would look like I have dirt on my face.
I worry about breaking out with primer, but have started wearing it under my eyes and on my chin where I have lines.
The nyx butter glosses - I have like five of them. I don't think they last and the colors are a little weird. It just seems like what it is - cheap gloss.
I don't think my eye shadow creases? Maybe it does. I don't know. But it looks the same regardless of primer so it doesn't help me lol.
Once I did a google image search for eyeshadow creasing, I learned mine usually doesn't either. I don't wear it every day but I do for super long days really just as insurance.
I do put a coat of cream shadow down every day. I feel like it gives the shadow a good canvas to stick to and helps it pop a bit more. My skin is dry and I like how it feels too. I use MAC paint pot in painterly about 75% of the time. I bought the jar a year ago and still have not hit pan.

YES! I forgot to mention that in the contouring thread. I'll do a strip of highlight down my nose but I will not WILL NOT put contour on the sides. No ma'am, my nose is just fine, thank you.
The thing I can't do is an all matte eye. Or at least, not while I have my glasses on. I look like a zombie.
And this too. I also blame it on the glasses. I need some kind of shimmer, even just in the corner of the lid. Other wise it all disappears and I hate it.
Eyeliner - it just smudges around every single time with my severely hooded eyes. Dark smokey eyes also don't really do anything for me either. And purple lipstick just isn't right for me.
