Some people have great success in the car in natural light.
Mine are normally taken at work under fluorescent lights. I use my iPhone and I tap the screen in various parts of the to get the right exposure. If you tap on something dark, the exposure adjusts, and it brightens up the picture.
I also try to avoid shadows from overhead light.
I take one looking at the screen. Then in a similar pose, I just look at something lower to show the shadow work on my eyes. I don't close my eyes for the second shot.
It takes 4-5 shots per pose. I post the best of each.
I did not know this! This is definitely game changing for me.

If you want to get fancier on the iPhone. Once you tap you can pull on the screen up and down to adjust the exposure.
I go outside and I also have a really good window for the winter months that has good lighting. If it's at night I have a good LED light that I can shine on my face. Occasionally in the car too.

I would like to know if there is a quicker way to post pics, too. Right now I email them from my Android phone to my computer and then upload to tinypic. But it's a PITA and sometimes I quit or chicken out partway through.
I have yet to find really good lighting. Mostly I take them in my home office and pull the curtains aside, but everything always comes out very blue-toned. Between that and the fact that apparently I am all eyes, a lot of the time I go, "Too much Gollum today, maybe tomorrow."

When you're on the ProBoards app, hit reply (while in the thread) and at the bottom you'll see "submit" "discard" and then a Camera icon. Click that and then choose "gallery" to pick the photo you just took.

At least that works on my Galaxy.
You're still using the proboards app?? You're old school.
litebright In the tapatalk app (for iPhone) there's a + icon to the left of the reply bar. Tap that and select either the camera icon to take a selfie or the photo icon to upload one from your photos. Easy peasy.

I upload them to photobucket from my iphone app and then post the link from there.

I'm sorry, I'm tech challenged. I have a galaxy s4. What app do I need to get?
Tapatalk. Then you can find Proboards >> GBCN and log in with your PB username.

I have a Samsung galaxy too, and I'm able to upload pictures pretty easily. I just view the site on the regular browser (the default one, not Chrome) but make sure it's in desktop mode, not the mobile site.
Then, when you hit reply, just click on "add attachment" and select the picture you want from your gallery. The pictures have to be fairly low resolution to upload -- I have to set my camera to the lowest setting.
