DH, after sort of pseudo househusbanding, half assed lawyering, for several years has now started practicing full time again. He's super passionate about what he's doing but I am not enjoying at all having to resume shared household responsibilities. You guys, I had to order my own pizza tonight. And serve it myself and everything. And the internet has been out all week and he hasn't had time to deal with the repair person, and I went out of town and he couldn't come with me . . . FWP, yes, but I deeply believe I was meant to be a man in the 50's so this sucks ass for me.
*he is basically getting paid nothing, so I am getting no benefit out of this but good karma I guess.
And, really? Elephant rights? That made me giggle for some reason.
LOL, it's real pizza. But DH really is an elephant rights attorney.
That is kind of awesome, well not for you. I guess someone has to do it. It just never even occurred to me that it would be a thing. Yay for Dumbos everywhere.
Elephants. And the chance to work for one of the nation's leading elephant rights attorneys. You can't make this stuff up.
Has he forsaken the manatees??
And I think it's sweet. Tell him you need to go to SD Zoo to investigate the elephant's habitats.
No no! Manatees remain beloved. He doesn't approve of the SD zoo but can't say why (whereas he has specific reasons for disliking the la zoo). So I'm still pro-SD zoo.

I made the mistake of asking if they had elephants at the SF zoo and got an earful about how elephants shouldn't be kept without a herd and without large roaming grounds, etc.

I find it encouraging that a half assed lawyer can get back on his feet. WHat has he been doing in the interim?
Animal rights work, but without a particular affiliation. You'll be fine Sonrisa. You could go back into any area you want, though maybe as an of counsel or staff attorney.

We have a whole safari park!
Yessss! That's why DH can't articulate an objection.
Sonrisa- the Oakland zoo has the only PETA approved zoo in the state that houses elephants. It's a model program, DH ( who has toured it extensively) assures me. So cross the bay.
Elle - do you remember the animal rights club at our alma mater? A few friends of mine were very involved. I will have to go to Oakland for a pachiderm fix.
Ohh, what are his opinions on the Toronto zoo? Did he hear Bob Barker pressured them to send the Elephants away? But the city owns the zoo, and their shitty shitty Mayor didn't do it exactly as he should have, so they aren't in a decent sanctuary now or something.
Elephant rights? This is really funny, and pretty awesome, and it totally sucks that it's for free. And you have to dial your own phone to get pizza delivered? dealbreaker, baby. Dealbreaker. throw his ass to the curb.
And, I had to meet the pizza guy at the door. Still not fully recovered.
Sonrisa- DH was still such a frat boy then, he was into some animal causes but he wasn't part of any public interest groups. I laughed at myself when I was back last week because DH called and asked me if I could find an elephant for him in one of the art galleries. In law school neither of us had time for art galleries (or public interest) and there I was, in one of the galleries, buying a free trade elephant.
Janie- DH thinks bob barker is God.
Tamb- being willing to work for nothing is a big help! He just started attending conferences, picking up cases here and there through animal groups, and then transitioned to working mostly for one person.

OMFG.
Was he hot?
No. It was very traumatizing. I think I inherited my grandfather's inability to participate in food preparation. He used to scream at my grandma "beackkky, some biscuits." I think that's who I take after.
I think I'd like to be an animal rights attorney. And, I've been half-ass lawyering for the last 7 years! How does one get into that sort of thing?
how do you feel about no salary?
It doesn't matter to me objectively. Subjectively, it makes me feel like his work is less important than mine. But that's not true, and when I was a public defender, at times paid nothing, he never complained, suggested I get a paying job, or acted like what I was doing was unimportant. So I am trying to give his job the same respect. Trying.
(A friend from Ohio is very supportive of this organization which is really the only reason I even know about it.)
Let me just say, Elle, that I admire you greatly for being so supportive of your DH's career goals. Someday there might be some money in it, but your supporting it while he's doing it for the love rather than the money is a really great thing. (And I admire you honesty about how you feel about it, too. Which makes you support even more impressive.)
Even if (or especially because) you have to order your own pizza to be delivered by a non-hot delivery guy. (But I bet you were in full make-up and heels and totally hot.)

You should count your lucky stars the pizza place still delivers. Imagine if you had to go out and pick it up yourself!
