DS1 is turning 5 this month. He is obsessed with Legos, as are most of his friends. I have stared giving his friends gift certificates to the Lego store so they can pick out their own. Anything Star Wars or Avengers is a big hit, too. There are superhero/Star Wars versions of a lot of classic board games (Chutes and Ladders, Operation, etc.) that are good for that age.

I'm a big fan of giving art supplies...new crayons, markers, sidewalk chalk. Even if the birthday boy or girl already has that stuff, they will need more eventually & it doesn't add to all the toys that most kids are alreadyswimming in.
My son's favorite gift from his last bday (4) was Stomp Rockets. We've since given them to someone else for a 3rd birthday, and they were the hit of that party too. My son is also super into puzzles (up to 100 pieces), stickers, matchbox cars, and books (The Circus Ship is a great one).

My son will be 3 on Wed. He loves Chuggington trains, dinosaurs, trucks, books, playing in the sandbox. He also loves to pretend: so costumes, a superhero cape, etc. would be fun.
We just visited our local children's museum today - a membership to a place like that would be wonderful.
Duplo blocks would be fun, too. We have a baby and the 3 yr old still puts things in his mouth, so Legos are too small right now. When he's ready for Legos, the baby will be ready for the Duplo.
