I have finally decided that the time has come to do something about my gray hair. So I have an appointment in a couple weeks for a cut and highlights.
Do I need special shampoo and conditioner? I'm using Bumble & Bumble Hairdressers Invisible Oil shampoo and conditioner right now, and it is the most glorious thing ever. I don't want to say goodbye. Please tell me I can keep using it. I typically wash my hair every other day.
It is recommended if you think it would help the color last longer. I have been using Redkin (red bottle) for color treated hair for years. It also is protects you from the sun and any heat damage (hair dryer, etc).
That being said, in the winter, I only wash my hair maybe 2-3x a week and one of those times I use Clear shampoo to combat any dry scalp issues.
I also use CHI Shine Infusion before and after I blow dry for more protection. Highlights can do a number on your hair!

This is what I used when I was coloring my hair as well, and it made a big difference. I don't know whether it's considered the best of the best, but the price is right and it gets the job done.
Ulta has good Redken shampoo sales a few times a year, and you can snag the 33 oz. bottles at half off. I have a boatload of the Redken Soft (gold bottle) in my basement because I keep forgetting I've already stocked up.

They have the sulfate free formula which I like even more. It's in a bright pink bottle.
One of my favorites is the Costco Pureology knock off. I like it better than some of the Pureology formulas I've used in the past. I like the Moroccan Oil line, the Redken one, Wella. I recently bought the Nexxus Color line- it's nice, too.
I use pureology. I recommend it. I've used the hydrate and new curly hair lines.
Do you have oily hair by any chance? I used to use the pink bottle for years (I think that's the volume one) and about a year ago I noticed that the formula changed. It makes my hair feel like straw now and I can't use it anymore. I used to love it. Have you noticed any changes in their formula? I might try it again, maybe I got a bad bottle.

I have curly/wavy/hot mess hair so it tends to be drier. I haven't noticed a change in the formula. I've been using pureology for two years maybe?

Thanks and lol @ your description. Maybe I got a bad bottle. It's one of those liter bottles from ulta. It used to be my favorite shampoo and I can't touch it now. I need to buy a smaller bottle and try again.

try the hydrate formula. You can get the little sample size and that will last you long enough to see how it works for you.
I don't want to part with my holy grail products!!!
I had to use conditioner to keep my ends from feeling like straw. However, I also was dying my hair red, which meant I had to touch everything, including my ends, up every single time. If you go with a subtle brown, for example, you shouldn't have to do that.

Oh I am still going to use conditioner, I just wasn't sure if I need a special color treated kind.

I've been dying my hair for years ( damn early grey).
I used special products for color treated hair. I switched to Bumble and Bumble about 4 months ago and I'm never going back.
My stylist, who is a big Aveda pusher (Aveda salon) even whispered to me that she gets why I use B& B and can't with a straight face try to sell me on Aveda.

LOL
Out of the zillions of dollars I've spent since I developed this beauty product addiction 13 months ago, my B&B invisible oil shampoo and conditioner has been the best money I have ever spent. I had to go two weeks without that shampoo recently, and it was awful. I want to cry thinking about not ever using it again. Damn gray hair.
I'm probably going to try this kind during the Sephora sale because I heart B&B and I'm hoping this can help console me as I part ways with the greatest hair care products ever known, and because Ulta is a pain in my ass.

That's a gentle and good quality shampoo so I wouldn't worry about it stripping your color out. If you were planning on going red it would be a different story but if you're just covering gray you should be fine.

What's the deal with red dyes? Just harder to maintain?
I'm probably going to go for warm reddish brown highlights. Do you still think it will be OK?
One of my favorites is the Costco Pureology knock off.
WHAT??
I had no idea this existed!!!
I love Pureology but lately I've been using the vegan brand at my salon. It's called Loma, if you can find it. I PPH that stuff but I may have to go to Costco and hit that Pureology knockoff up.

Reds fade quicker than any other color since the dye particles are larger, which makes it harder for them the grab onto the hair follicle.
I use the bumble and bumble color stuff. I have no issues with fading between colors.

reds fade the fastest. I think you'll be fine with a reddish brown, especially if it's highlights.
I get my hair dyed to cover the gray too. My stylist uses and highly recommends the B&B Hairdressers Invisible Oil shampoo and conditioner. I haven't bought it yet myself, but it's supposed to be good for color treated hair.
