Giuliana Rancic's weight has been the topic of many conversations since her appearance at the 2015 Golden Globes, but after the scrutiny had "gotten out of hand," the E! News anchor is finally speaking out about what is going on with her health...and body.
"Some people were saying, 'The cancer is probably back,'" Rancic, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and underwent a double mastectomy that same year, dishes to People magazine, on newsstands Friday. "And they were accusing me of every eating disorder. I thought to myself, 'God, if someone really thought I had an eating disorder, what a horrible way to approach it.'"
Fortunately the 40-year-old E! star doesn't have an eating disorder and is still cancer-free, but reveals her low weight is a result of a cancer-suppressing medication that she has been taking since 2012. "I started noticing that I was eating a lot, but not gaining weight at all," Rancic says. "I was concerned."
Rancic's oncologist, Dr. Dev Paul, informed her that the medication could alter her metabolism and cause weight loss. Despite facing criticism on a daily basis about her weight, she is just grateful that she continues to be happy and healthy with her family, which includes husband Bill Rancic and, of course, adorable son Duke Rancic!
"It's really hurtful," Rancic says of the negative attention. "I'm sorry that some people think I'm disgustingly skinny, as they put it, but there's nothing I can do. I'm lucky that I even have the type of cancer that reacts to the medicine."
She maintains that her appetite hasn't changed even though she can't gain weight. In fact, the Fashion Police host confesses she eats more than anyone she knows.
"I eat more than any of my friends," she says. "I eat a very robust, healthy, balanced diet and dessert almost every night. I'm not hiding from anything."
Even though she has an overall positive outlook and attitude, the overwhelming criticism has taken its toll on Rancic, especially when it comes to her self-esteem. "I look in the mirror and it's hard for me," she admits. "I am really thin. I want to look fit and beautiful and sexy, and I can't."
She was upset when a high-profile publication wanted to feature her but backed out because she was too thin, something that she described as "really hurtful" because she's "doing the best" she can.
"I never want my weight to distract people from what I do," she says. "But it is becoming a distraction, [whenever] I wear something sleeveless, show my arms, my back."

"I never want my weight to distract people from what I do," she says. "But it is becoming a distraction, [whenever] I wear something sleeveless, show my arms, my back."
So basically "I don't want the way I look to get in my way of judging the way other people look".
Hmm, if she is eating the diet that was previously discussed I'm side eyeing the description of it as 'very robust, healthy, balanced diet' though perhaps she has changed her eating and is eating a well rounded diet. I do feel for her that she is on medication she needs that is causing her to be even thinner then normal.

So I . . . don't believe her. She was incredibly thin before cancer. She's discussed her "diet" before. And this isn't the first time she's fudged what a doctor said to excuse away how thin she is.
I mean it's possible she's just a naturally thin girl and always has been. Angelina Jolie certainly seems to be. But Guiliana's been interviewed enough times and discussed both her eating habits and her exercise habits often enough that it's difficult to believe that. Add in that this is at least the third "justification" she's issued about why she's thin, then meh, you do you, Guiliana but forgive me for not buying it.

Also, I am really trying very hard not to feel some kind of way about a heifer who makes her money talking mad smack about people feeling some kind of way about people talking mad smack about her.
And when I say really trying hard, I mean not trying hard at all.
Don't want people to speculate about your weight, try not hosting shows that passively or actively engage in talking about people's looks including weight.
I will say my former StepMom is on a medication post Breast Cancer that had this effect on her. She went from pleasently plump to thin/average. however, she took herself to a registered dietitian and figured out a healthy eating plan that gave her enough calories to keep her at a healthy and suitable weight, which did involve eating a LOT of food/calories and healthy fats. Which I don't believe GR would ever be willing/able to do.

Go sit your ass down somewhere.
or at the very least keep your mouth shut about it. i don't give this story a second thought until she says something about it.

elaborate, grasshopper.
I'm referring to when she said her doctor told her to gain ten pounds at least but then the doctor said five would be okay and she's really not that thin.
The whole story was weird. She made it sound like he told her to gain some weight so she could get pregnant when really, it sounded like he told her to gain weight full.stop. And she said, well, no because E will fire me if I'm not this thin.
See how disjointed that sounds? Because that's about as disjointed as her whole story was.

was this when she had the reality show and was trying to get pg?

i really don't watch that show. i swear.
I believe so yes, because I don't watch it either. I just heard/read about it.
So, she's probably on Tamoxifen, which can cause weight loss, it happens in a small percentage of patients.
I don't know. I mean, if there was a rare side effect from a treatment my DH was on, he got it. And he's been unable to regain the 40lbs he's lost since diagnosis, even though his cancer is receding, despite all our best attempts. So people probably think he has an eating disorder too (6' & 140lbs)
I'm not saying she doesn't have an ED, she might, but I also think her meds could be playing a role.

I do think it's likely her meds are a factor, but I also think so is her history of disordered eating. lucyhoneychrrrch posted an article in the ML thread where she writes out what she typically eats (or ate, she has probably had to change that somewhat given the cancer) and it's alarming to say the least.
would a side effect hit her now if she has been on it since 2012?
Sure, they don't always show up immediately. A lot of patients take tamoxifen for 2-3 years then switch to another hormone therapy to manage the side effects that show up later.
Maybe it's the meds, as she says. Who knows. I just side eye her because she never says a word about it until she's criticized. And then it's all.....it's the meds! It's not my fault! I eat like a pig! I mean, she's in the public eye, she's a public figure. She has to realize that people are going to talk about her weight and if there's a legitimate reason for it - I.e medication side effect then say it. I just feel like she has tried to be a breast cancer survivor advocate so why not mention this? I'm not saying shout it from the treetops any chance you get, but any one of the gazillion times she's interviewed or whatever and someone asks how are you, she could have mentioned she's struggling with the meds she's on, struggling with some side effects she's experiencing.
She really might have reached BEC status for me. Because I cannot for the life me understand how she manages to live her life without seeing what an unmitigated hypocrite she is. Her job is to talk about people, to make assumptions based on their looks, their appearance, manner of speech, interviews, and lifestyle choices. But the minute someone does the same to her, it's hurtful, it's mean, we don't know her life, she has medical issues, etc.
She's not just some celebrity living her life. She is a professional gossip, ffs and then gets pissy when people gossip about her.
I'm a terrible cynic, because my first response is to be suspicious of the timing of the release of these stories.
I am TOTALLY here. Every time there is enough of a backlash, she releases so sad stories from her life. Granted, I don't believe she's lying about these things. But the loss was in January. She's mentioning it for the first time NOW in the same article meant to deflect her weight loss and make you feel like an asshole for even thinking about it.
