Okay. Somebody explain how colour works

You can wear pretty much any color on your eyes. It's just a matter of placement. You might want to search for tutorials on placement and blending because I have a hard time believing you can't wear dark brown.

Brown of any intensity is basically a neutral, so it's all about careful application to make sure you get as much or as little as you want.

I own Basics and know what you are talking about; it's easy to go overboard with the darker colors. Just apply a tiny bit at a time and keep blending.

I have taken to tapping my brush in the powder and then tapping it on a bit of tissue to take off the excess.  Then I apply with the lightest touch imaginable, almost to the point that my brush is not touching my skin.

To build upon the placement point, depending upon a thousand variables, you may want to restrict dark shadows to just your crease or outer V.  I happen to be one of those who can't do dark all across the mobile part of my lid without it aging me 20 years, so I keep it to the outer part of my eye.  I have deep set eyes, so I can safely put a dark color in my crease, but my inner corner needs to light.  I cannot use shadow under my eye because, again, it ages me.  I stick with light eye liners.  I would love to rock a true smoky eye, but it makes me look like an aging rock star.
