I bought a clipless curling iron today, and after using it, my hair looks like it does after I don't blowdry it. It's flat at the roots, has a bend in the middle of the hair shaft, and then the ends are straight (b/c there's no clip to hold them to the iron).
WTF. Why does everyone like these? What am I doing wrong? I did it just like the tutorials on YouTube but their hair is curly and mine is stupid.
I don't have at advice, as I've never used a clip less one, but your pic made me laugh. Maybe it's just trial and error? It took me 5-6 times curling my hair with a regular iron before I felt like i was getting the hang of it.
yeah, it has seriously taken me years to find the right combo of curling method + product to get my hair to look really nice curled. I don't use a clipless one because IMO it can only be used one way (I can use my regular ones just like a clipless one, or I can use it normally). However, I'm going to guess the problem is just practice and/or product.
I use a foam-type product when my hair is wet, then I let it dry (often in some type of messy-bun or ponytail), then the next day I curl it. Before curling it, I spray a heat protectant and Treseme Ultra-Fine Mist Hairspray.
Did you just curl the one piece or your whole head? The piece in the front looks really good. I would clip up the majority of your hair and try it in once inch sections (don't shove a ton of hair in there). I always spray hair spray on my hair before curling, curl my entire head in sections and then spray again.
After my whole head is done I wait about 10 minutes and thn run my fingers through to break up the curls.
Oh no! I agree to keep trying. I have the Sultra Bombshell, and it's awesome. There was a learning curve to figure out how long I needed to leave it on my hair, but now that I'm used to it, it's great. This pic was showing a friend my color after dyeing, but I had my hair curled that day.

I did my whole head in sections, but I think part of the problem was 1) lack of product and 2) I was in a hurry. But I do notice when I wrap my hair around the iron, it twists, and in instances where it twists more then it curls less.
I do think I need more practice, but I'm really good with a regular curling iron, so I don't know if I'll keep it. I'll try a few more times and see if it improves.
Yea, you have to make sure your hair lays flat on it. I use my regular curling iron without the clip only because I bought the wrong size clipless and it makes me look like Shirley Temple.
I bought one and used it twice and hated it. For some reason the curls looked more shirley temple like and not sexy loose beach wavey. I can get the beachy look w/ a regular iron, so I returned the clipless one and just bought a better (hotter) 1-1/2 inch curling iron.
I returned it yesterday. It was funny, when I got to the register I told the cashier "I have a return. I bought this yesterday, and it's just very awkward and I can't figure it out." She kind of snickered and I asked if she had tried it yet, and she said "yes, I brought mine back too."
I am too afraid to even try a clipless one. How do you not burn yourself? I would need medical attention after one curl.
I DID. It came w/ this glove that only covered my index and middle fingers and thumb, and I burned my ring finger on it. Mine was Conair, the Remington ones come w/ a 5-fingered glove but Target was out of those.
Ugh I know I have one and I'm not crazy about it either. It takes so much more work than a regular curling iron. And my arms get tired using it haha! But, I spent too much money on it and I can't return it so I use it! Not as often as I should, so maybe with more practice I'll start to like it better.
