I think primer gives me a smoother surface to work with -- yay for having both fine lines and the occasional zit. It seems to fill in/smooth out the surface in general. And it means I'm applying my makeup to silicon vs. oil, basically, since I always moisturize/put sunscreen on first. When I think about it that way, it seems pretty obvious that it would help my makeup stay on longer.
I dunno. Primer is one of those things that I didn't use until the past couple of years and thought I was fine without, but once I started using it, I can definitely tell when I don't, and prefer to use it. I use BM's Prime Time and BM foundation.
Along the same lines, I have always wondered if there is really *that* much difference between foundation primer and eye shadow primer. If I'm already priming my face, can't I just rub the same stuff on my eyelids for the same effect? It does seem like my UD shadow primers are thicker and a bit "grabbier", for lack of a better word. One of these days I'll think of that while I'm getting ready and experiment with face primer on one lid and shadow primer on the other and see if there's a noticeable difference by the end of the day.

Hourglass mineral veil is by far my favorite. It doesn't feel heavy on my skin, smooths everything out, makes my foundation look really nice, and legitimately helps my makeup last longer.

OK, thanks. I do use eyeshadow primer and it definitely makes a difference so this helps.
But here's another question: I don't use foundation, I used NARS tinted moisturizer, so is the foundation primer going to be too heavy or whatever under that? Thanks all!
I think it depends on the primer. The BM stuff I use is a (fairly thick) liquid, and to me it seems pretty light. I've used Smashbox's primer that is more of a silicon gel, and that feels heavier/thicker to me. I've also used Monistat's anti-chafing gel, which is a silicon gel that seems really similar to the Smashbox colorless formula, frankly -- it's often recommended as a cheap alternative to primer and it's like $6 a tube or something.
I haven't had any issue with silicon-based primers, but I know some people do and there are non-silicon formulations that are an option -- but I have no idea if they would be lighter or heavier.
Occasionally I will wear only my Maybelline bb cream, but I still feel like it goes on more evenly and stays better with a primer underneath.
My sunscreen that I use every day basically works like a primer. I use it under bb cream and it looks smoother and wears better when I use the sunscreen versus when I wear the bb cream alone.

I have really oily skin and have found that when I don't wear some sort of primer my foundation goes on unevenly and my makeup comes off within the first couple of hours.

I only wear it if I have a long day or for special occasions. I guess because I have very little dignity and don't care what my face looks like by 5:00 most days lol. But it does make my foundation last longer and go on smoother.
Unfortunately my skin doesn't seem to love primer. I didn't make the connection until I read in the giant makeup thread that someone else was breaking out. I noticed once I stopped using primer (Smashbox Pore Minimizing Primer) my jaw area cleared up. I think my skin is not a fan of silicones.
