Hold the camera either straight on or tilted slightly toward your forehead, never your chin. Natural light makes all the difference. I get the best results in a dark room right in front of a window but with the blinds closed.
Face natural light, like a big window, but not in direct sunlight. Turn on the grid lines on your phone and line up your eyes with the top line, at least one of your eyes where the lines cross. Photos taken from slightly above you (look up a little bit) are more flattering so extend your arm and and hold the camera high. I tend to have my thumb lined up with the bridge of my nose. That help?
Natural light, as far as your arm will extend, shooting from the top down.
So is the florescent light in the bathroom why my face always looks off in regards to color? Because I swear, my foundation matches my neck until I take a picture and suddenly it's two shades lighter.
What do you mean from the top down? Like, holding it up and looking up into the camera?
Yup. Florescent light is the devil.
Yup, hold the camera anywhere above nose height. Think about it as not pointing the camera up your nostrils.

If my skin and hair looked like it does in the work bathroom I'd hate myself. Those lights are in fact the devil.
The other thing I've figured out is that if I'm using the camera on the screen side of my phone (S5), I need to make sure that I wipe the lens area clean first. Face oil inevitably smears on it and yucks up my pictures.

All of this. Also, does your phone have a voice command camera function? That way you don't have to try to touch any buttons (and could possibly use the back camera if it's better than the front one).
Pardon me but I'm voice command stupid. I have an iPhone 5. Is there a voice command for taking photos? I swear, 9 out of 10 come out blurry b/c I'm trying to hit that damn screen button.
Divide the screen into thirds. Your eyes should be in the top two sections. Hold it up and away from your face (forces you to raise your chin) and tilt the camera slightly
Yep.
I use natural window light, sometimes as back light depending on what effect I'm aiming for. Extending the arm, getting the right angle, may take some practice.
