I was told to go in when contractions were 5 minutes apart lasting 1 minute for 2 hours. Since my OB knew I wanted to do it naturally she recommended I wait a bit longer. My contract started out 3 minutes apart lasting 90 seconds, but I still waited a bit over 2 hours to go in. I rolled in to the doc's office at 8cm (the car ride was incredibly awful). They wheeled me over to the hospital and I was 9cm and she was born about an hour later. .
I tell my clients 5/1/2-3, so 5 mins apart, lasting a minute for 2-3 hours. Though my clients are almost exclusively attempting natural birth and want to arrive at the hospital in or near transition. If you're planning on an epidural, you want it in place before transition, so 5/1/1-2 is better for that.
Either way, sounds like you're well on your way. Good luck!

I went in to be induced, so no help there, but I wanted a natural (med-free) birth, so I would have waited as long as possible and labored at home, just depends on what you want. If you want meds, get there sooner rather than later.
