SO. Important question.
Was there anything you pack yourself? Like, they're going to know that one box I've already packed in the bedroom is just lingerie and sex toys, right?

OK, so more questions. How does this even work? We also have to get a cleaner and an exterminator to come in (relo company is paying for that, too!). How long do movers take to pack everything up? Like can we have movers come in the morning, cleaners in the afternoon, and be gone that evening?
The logistics of this are overhwhelming, especially with the cats as part of the equation.

DAMMIT!
H just got a call back from the relo company. We are not actually getting full service movers. Still waiting to hear what we're getting. I think we get loaders and unloaders but have to drive the truck ourselves.

They will not touch a jewelry box. They will not pack candles or cleaning supplies. You also want to make sure that you remove any and all financial documents from your house before you let them in. I put mine in an old suitcase in the trunk of my car when the packers arrived.

The packers took about 6 hours to pack my 2 BR apartment. The next day, the movers had it emptied in about 3 hours.
Board the cats, BTDT.
ETA: I see that they're not going to do it all. Still, boarding the cats is the most logical thing as the door will be open all the time coming in and out.

I have never heard of anyone driving a truck themselves wiht a relo company.

H has been authorized for a "self move."
This includes reminbursement for: Packing materials Truck rental Gas Tolls Hiring people to load and unload the truck Mileage for our car Meals and hotel on the way 1 night of hotel in our current city 1 night of hotel in our new city Up to 7 days of temporary lodging plus meals One 3-day house-hunting trip (airfare, hotel, meals) Up to 30 days of storage
BOO. I got so excited about not packing and about not having to drive the truck ourselves.
That's still saving you a bunch of money and sounds very similar to what I did. Although I did not drive a truck. The local movers can still wrap your furniture & electronics though. I did not mind the packing myself. Although of course I'd prefer if someone else did it for me.

I will not be driving a truck. H will drive the truck. And my dad also offered to help us drive the truck (with the caveat that we don't make him drive around Chicago).
I will be on cat duty in the car.
I was just excited not to pack because I've moved...12?...times in the last 10 years. I'm SO OVER packing. It's also why I just want to throw everything away.
The relo people called. H talked to them. He comes upstairs and says, "Guess who is getting full service movers?" We high five. It is awesome. I call my dad and say, by the way, we don't need your help. He says he'll come visit when we're settled in. Excitement ensues.
The phone rings 30 minutes later, and the relo person says that she was mistaken and we only get the self-move.

I wanted to just throw away our dishes & glassware because I thought it would be cheaper to rebuy than pack & move.

LOL. That I know is not true! My Waterford china is like $120/place setting!
I am just using this as a good reason to get rid of a lot of stuff we don't use.
I actually may have some of the local board ladies over for pancakes and mimosas and packing while H is out at the new job. They promised to "lose" some of the stuff H refuses to throw away!

Oh the nice stuff went to MIL's basement. We don't have room to store it in the little closet that we live in. Our wine glasses were $6 or $8 each from Crate & Barrel. I'm pretty sure I used $6 worth of wrapping supplies for each of them.

Ah, this is pretty much our forever move. (heart)
We are moving into an apartment we can see ourselves staying in for 3 years and then will probably buy a house.
It is entirely possible that I will only move 2 more times before I am retired, which is kind of exciting and kind of terrifying. I'm not good at sitting still.
I still think it is a good deal. I think the packing party is a great idea. My mil helped and it was awesome. She did dishes and impersonal stuff why I concentrated on stuff that needed to be weeded out.
