I found that thread surprisingly refreshing considering its the bump. Most people said outrageous consumerism/materialism is a negative thing. Seriously no matter how much money you make or how much you donate or how good of a person you are there are ways to spend money responsibly and irresponsibly.
I agree people have different priorities and I have no qualms with splurge items but I think the level of materialism that occurs when you have a baby is so disgusting. Advertisers actually convince women that if you don't buy x,y or z your baby is at this or that risk. Some of the posters already started that emotional bribery with the formaldehyde free comments. Come on.
yikes. i love the assumption that all rich people are flashy and showy and just want to spend their money. who could fathom that for a lot of people it's not an either/or scenario - they can buy the swanky crib and save and give to charity? nonsense!
stick to mmm, it seems so much safer and a lot less crazy ;-)

I think the OP in the link was overreacting. Who cares how much someone else spends on a crib. If they can afford it, what is it to you.
I do not think you can compare a 1k crib to a 250k car. If a crib was your top priority, there are plenty of people who would be able to afford a 1k crib. There are not a lot of people would be able to spend 250k on a car.
I also do not think a crib is a crib. We were willing to pay more for a crib made in the USA and that was GreenGuard certified.
While I think we do have a problem with consumerism and overspending I also think we have issues with wanting the cheapest crap we can get. Lots of of baby stuff is either overpriced or unnecessary. However sometimes spending a bit more does get you higher quality.

People are weird. $900 for a crib seems totally within the range of normal. Not everyone wants to get a bargain for every single thing in life. Sometimes it is nice to pick out what you like and be done with it.
Who cares how much people spend on their crib? If they have the money and they want it, that's their business. My MIL bought our nursery furniture as a gift, and they spent an obscene amount of money, IMO. We loved it and really wanted it, and they have the money to gift us something like that. Who cares how other people spend their money?

Lol, this is what I was thinking. Actually, when I first read it I thought $900 seemed low and that she was going to start complaining about the cheap crib her inlaws bought her.
I haven't looked at cribs in a really long time though so I guess I just forgot what they cost. But if you think about it, $900 isn't that much for something that most people will use every day for at least two years and probably longer if they have more than one child.
I can't read that entire thing but we are far from rich and spent $700 for a crib. We needed a sturdy one that would last for the 4 kids we plan on having. As long as the person can either afford the $900 crib or plan on having more kids I do not see anything flashy about that.
