My cat started peeing on the floor a few months ago. We have done everything on the posted FAQ (other than kitty prozak) with no luck. She always goes at the bottom of the basement stairs. We put a plastic mat there, and she still goes on the plastic mat. Which is good- because its easy to clean. But between the chance of a pee puddle + 2 litter boxes sitting there with associated litter scattered over the landing, it makes going to our nicely furnished basement pretty gross. (she pees 1-2x/week on the floor with no rhyme or reason as to why)
So, we are thinking of locking her out of the basement completely, and putting her litterbox in the bathroom upstairs (by the bedrooms). The hope is that, since she only pees in the one general area, that she will stop peeing on the floor once she loses access it this area.
I am unsure as to whether this will cause her to just find another carpet spot to pee on. And then there's no going back on our decision. Plus, I am not looking forward to my kids brushing their teeth in the litter room (or stepping out of the tub onto litter, etc). There's no other spot that it'll go though.

We have an FAQ on peeing, have you guys tried more litterboxes, feliway, etc? When ours did this I put a box exactly where he was peeing and gradually moved it. You could try adding a box to the place you want her to go and when she starts using that lock her out of the basement.

Yes, as I mentioned in the OP, I have done everything in the FAQ except the kitty prozak. Thanks !

You should have at least one box on every level, and they should be placed in areas convienant for the cat, not hidden away in areas that may be loud or scary. Your cat may not feel safe in the basement, maybe that is why it is at the foot of the stairs? What boxes do you use? Has she been to the vet?

Yes shes been to the vet. Regular new boxes. For 11 years the box has been in the basement storage room. She started peeing on the floor at the bottom of the stairs so we moved her litter there. she has only ever peed in the basement and it's anything but loud or scary.
