most things melissa & doug musical instrument set, the food cutting set (all 3 of my boys LOVED this around 2-3)... puzzles...
if someone wants to get something big/$$, a bounce house is great to have. we got one for DS1 for his 2nd birthday instead of having a big party - and it's been a great investment.

On our list (some of which we'll give them for Christmas) are starter train set, aquadoodle, a baby doll and accessories (high chair, bottle, etc.), backpacks for traveling, puzzles, Melissa and Doug dress-up sets (fireman, pirate), stickers, coloring books.
DS just turned 2 and we had the party yesterday. The Melissa and Doug food cutting set was a huge hit as well as a wagon. He also really enjoyed getting a garage for all his cars, but that may not be your DD's type of thing. He also really enjoys the play-doh kits and toys (mini cookie cutters, rolling pins, etc.) right now.

We love memberships. We get zoo/science museum/children's museum annual memberships from family. Usually around $50. Great gift that gets used al year!

She hasn't really been into a lot of the pretend play until recently and it really doesn't capture her attention for very long. She also couldn't petal her tricycle until close to 3.
