I have a link to my avatar, but I can't make it "stick". Do I just do the http:// address or do I need to do the (img)(/img) thing?
The Avatars are different. Just use the http:// address, and make sure it links to an actual picture. If it doesn't show up it may be because it's a format that it can't understand or can't resize it. If you can make a resized version of the image that's 100x100 pixels or less that will certainly work.

What's funny is I resized it to 100x100 (I use LiveJournal and make icons for that, so I'm super familiar with doing that), and it just won't accept the link from Flickr. Oh well - I'll keep playing with it.

This is because Flickr have become a bunch of jerks.
You can't grab the actual image link directly. If you go to "Share -> Grab the link" it just produces a link to the photo page. If you try "Share->Grab the HTML/bbcode" it wraps the image in a link to the page, which is why Pro Boards doesn't like it. You have to choose "Grab the HTML", paste it into notepad or text edit, and then pick out only the image URL and use that, like
Fun, ain't it? Technically it's now a violation of Flickr's Terms of Use to link directly to an image. I'm no lawyer but I don't think this would hold up in court.
Posting to facebook and then linking directly works fine, BTW.
