I noticed a darker spot of my area rug this morning. Since prior to last summer I hadn't had anything carpet related in my house for three years I'm out of the loop. What's the best stuff to spot clean these days? I think the last stuff I used when I was in the apartment many a moons ago was Resolve.

Any agent you decide to use, make sure you test an unexposed area to be sure it will react well with the fabric contents of the rug. The last thing you want to see happen is for the cleaning agent to leave a ring -or worse- a stain/discoloration. You can always contact a local cleaner, with rug cleaning experience, to find out what safe methods they may recommend. Best of Luck!
What's it made out of it? I'd double check that first. If it's a "normal" fabric I really like Resolve but the powder stuff. Brush it in, let it sit and then vacuum. It keeps my carpet/rugs look great. I know people have buildup issues with Resolve but I only use it every few months if even and it seems to do the trick.
Generally speaking, I find the spot cleaning ultimately makes things worse. It will appear to clean the spot at first, but with time the area of the rug that was cleaned will develop a darker color as compared with the rest of the carpet around it. Just an FYI.
That said, I'd probably opt for OxyClean over Resolve, simply because I find the darkening effect is a bit less with OxyClean.

Always check an unexposed area first! You never know how certain cleaning agents and products will react to different fabrics and textiles. Whenever you spot clean, always keep in mind there is the possibility of needing a full cleaning - a ring or different shade of color can be left when spot cleaning.
