I'm bummed. I ordered a navy tufted ottoman from Ethan Allen in January. It has been on back-order and won't arrive until mid-May :/ Meanwhile, I found a piece of "art" that I really like. Z Gallerie had a 15% off sale so I snagged it. 30 days to return. www.zgallerie.com/p-16190-vintage-bordeaux.aspx
I was hoping the art would have some blues in it, to tie with the ottoman. It really doesn't; mainly purple.
WDYT. Would this picture work well with navy? It's def a true navy. Or should I keep looking?
This is about the max amount I want to spend and I do think this size works well. Whatever I get really becomes the focal point of the room.
Problem is, I only have 30 days to return... and that time is going to pass before I get the ottoman so I really need to make the decision now.
It's art. Do you like it? Or is it just to fill the space? If I saw that in a room with the colors you are working with, I'd figure it spoke to you, and think it was pretty. I love everything I have on my walls, and not all of it "goes" in my space color wise.
I like it; a lot. But I really want what ever "art" I choose to work with what I already have. I'm not in looooooove with it... but I do like it. And it was the right price and right size.
I'm gonna go with you don't think it will work with navy
Did you already post about this, or am I losing it? Deja Vu
I did. But I hadn't received the large piece from z gallerie. And I really thought there was more blue. But yea; there's not. I have another wall for the other print. *sigh* I thought I had it all figured out. Back to square 1.
I really like the z-gallerie artwork (more so than that other artwork a few posts down) and I think it could definitely work with a navy ottoman. Dark purple and navy aren't that far apart to me. Blurple, lol.
ps - something about that red awning artwork is just too busy with the brick, imo. The z-gallerie piece looks so much better in that space.
I can't help think that it would be a whole lot easier to shop a gallery- I don't see how you could pick up on the subtleties that make something speak to you via a screen. If you feel you don't trust yourself to make a choice around this, or if you can't see art as anything but an accessory to a room, maybe you should put yourself in the capable hands of the design team at Ethan Allen. Not a fan of buying art at EA, but at least they'll have something curated to work with the navy ottoman.
If you really loved the piece, you'd embrace it. But you don't. I think part of why the pieces don't work is because they are not curated to the same standard as the other elements in the room. You have more exclusive taste around the other pieces you've chosen for the room- the wing chair and the curtain rods, to say nothing of the ottoman you chose speak to a level of quality/price point that neither of these options even approaches. Framing them would help, but custom framing is expensive and would be a waste if you're looking at something you don't love or would throw out in 5 years when you re-do the room.
I get not wanting to spend a lot, but I can't help but think a well designed poster or photograph that speaks to you would be a better choice. LOL, I was at my cousin's house a few weeks ago; she has a beautiful home. Very high end and almost fussy furnishing and finishes- no kids and single into her mid-40's- so everything is not only pristine, it's very understatedly elegant. It reminds me of a high end bridal salon. Anyhoo, she recently returned from her honeymoon to Paris and Northern Italy. She came home with two paintings- I swear one of them is some iteration of your street scene. NMS, but she loves them. If she bought them at Home Goods, I don't think it would be the same.

I agree that is would be awesome to find something in a gallery but to be very honest, I'm not an art person. I just want something I like and something that works well in my space. The reason I'm leaning to European landscapes if bc dh and I have spent a lot of time traveling Europe, so they do "speak" to me that way. Even though I bought the second one from Kirkland, lol
But it doesn't go with the colors I'm really leaning towards. Arrrggggg. I loathe this process. I have a deadline of June 1 bc we're hosting an event at our house. :0
I'm not tied to any of these colors except the navy. But I do want some color. And not red.
Have you tried Etsy? You said you have spent a lot of time traveling in Europe - search for a place that is meaningful to you and see what comes up. I agree with others that art should be personal and meaningful...otherwise it's just space filler. I feel like a lot of our art doesn't "go" in terms of colors but we love it. For example these painting in our living room we love and chose in part because they are paintings of a local area that is meaningful to us. .
Most of the stuff I've bought recently is local, but I have a number of pieces I got in Rockport and Gloucester over the years. Pride of place is a High Rock Seascape my great great uncle painted.
I love the painting and I think something that interesting can work with any decor, but I agree. If you don't love it, you will always (maybe just subconsciously) be on the lookout for something better. Art stresses me out too. Good luck!

I think the painting works...it's a good size, and it has cool colors even if it doesn't have navy specifically. I don't think it has to be matchy-matchy, but if you want to tie it in a little better you could always get new curtains that have navy and the green or purple from the painting in them? Or tie it in with throw pillows or something. I wouldn't design around an ottoman, it's a pretty minor piece in the grand scheme of the room.

I have zero memory, but do you have hesitation with a mirror there? It will "fill" the space and be neutral, plus bounce light.
I sometimes get caught up in "art to coordinate" but then realize that is just silly. Hang what you love, not what matches. Which is what I've done in my workspace:
(Sorry, big instagram pictures and now I can't resize them for some reason.) (And yes, that is MY Fisher Price record player. No kids allowed.)

Alright; I think I want something with a little more pizzaz. I like this one a lot; but need much much bigger. :/ Except; I do have a large wall behind our sofa that will need some "art."

emoflamingo, I used to have a mirror there and I just think I could do better. It reflected nothing and was just kind of blah.
I really like this pink poppy piece and think it would look great with the navy, if you do decide to hang it over the sofa.
As for a mirror, I don't know what you had before, but have you looked at more decorative mirrors or mirrors with beveling? I have a mirror that is a group of small panes, each with beveled edges. I think such mirrors diffuse the light differently and aren't just a flat/straight reflection.
But sh!t; I'm loving the paned mirrors; but I have larger paned windows in this room. It that too matchy-matchy?
pumpkin - I really like that poppy piece too. The wall is huge so I'm kind of leaning toward this series (there is 3) and I would get them framed. Hopefully dh doesn't think they're too girly.

I agree with all of this. I'm going to start using the word blurple too.
I just finished the thread and see you've moved on to mirrors! I think a paned mirror would look nice in the space and I don't think it would be crazy unless it basically matched the window exactly.
My favorite is still the 1st poppy you posted; in fact I've been trying to figure out if I have a place to put it. But you have to like them and depending on how you mat and frame them they could be less "girly."
As for the mirrors, I don't think them being higher than the 1st picture you posted is that much of an issue since you have the height to play with and your windows use that so I can see that bringing it together. I think something more like the 1st mirror you posted would be great; it gives shape, height, and texture without mirroring the shape and style of the windows too closely which is why I prefer to the other 2 mirrors you choose (but I do like those too, just not sure they'd be ideal in that room).
I know I'm not the best on this board when it comes to envisioning a room, so I hope you find a few pieces you love; that's what I try to go with.
