It took us three nights tops and that was when we just started sleep training. Every now and then he will fight sleep, usually when he is teething and super cranky.
Is your LO tired at all when you put him down for the night? DS usually goes to bed b/w 7-7:30, depending on when his last nap ended. Some days, he goes down by 6:30 b/c he's just exhausted from skipping a nap. Good luck.
It didn't take more than a few times and we actually started with naps because her bedtime bottle was the last to go. Every now and then she will still cry when we put her down for nap/bed but she's asleep with in 10 minutes

On the 5th night, he didn't fuss at all and just rolled around, then went to sleep. We sleep trained to go to sleep on his own at bedtime right around 4.5m. To this day, he rarely fusses when we put him down for the night.
Naps, on the other hand, we didn't tackle until more like 5.5m. To this day, he will still scream out as we're leaving the room for a nap about 50% of the time. He might fuss for a minute or two and then gets into his self-soothing mode and goes to sleep, but it's not nearly as smooth as it is for nighttime.

Our baby took about 2.5 or 3 weeks before she started going to sleep without fussing or crying. However, after about 1.5 weeks or so the crying/fussing was only about 5 or 10 minutes -- while that's not fun, it was tolerable.
I hear that some babies always cry or fuss a few minutes before going to sleep, as it is their way of decompressing.
