We just found out that every town in a 100 mils radius of our new base has a law prohibiting pit bulls. If we are caught with our dog, we will be fined $1,000, possibly jailed for 30 days and Onyx will be confiscated and put to sleep.
I would be careful about registering him as a service dog if he isn't actually one. The fines/jail time for that are much higher. I would suggest looking into an emotional support dog. My grandma has anxiety and her therapist helped her get one and he didn't require any special training like service dogs. You can't take him everywhere like restaurants as you would a service dog, but you can take them on airplanes and in housing complexes that do not allow animals. Good luck.
You might find some unincorporated areas around wherever you're going that will allow pitbulls. And I agree, breed specific laws are ridiculous. Sorry you're dealing with this.
Have you read the law? Is there a specific percentage of pit bull DNA that is allowable? My friend recently ran into this problem, had her dog tested and it turned out that he was beneath the allowable DNA percentage.
I think these laws are ridiculous. I'm a firm believer that the dog is a reflection of its master...much like kids.
We read the laws in several of the towns last night. They state that the dog can't be any of the breeds of pit (staff, American, etc) or look predominantly like one of the listed breeds. Onyx is a pure bred staff bull terrier, so even if they allowed for the DNA test he wouldn't pass it.
We are registering him as an emotional support dog. I should have been more specific in my update. It's super easy to do.

Can you share how you are doing that? I plan to do this with my dog.
