A kid I know was telling me about her prom plans. I asked where they were going for dinner and she said Applebees. I kind of respected them for not spending a ton of money.

But.....but....you can aim a little higher than Applebees or Champps and not break the bank! :-)
LOL I don't know...we aimed a little higher and one girl's date didn't cover her dinner so the guys all ended up having to chip in more money. Would have been better if we were at Applebees. haha

My group of friends ate at our favorite Chinese restaurant, because it was meaningful to us. There aren't many fancy options on my island, and the ones that we had are pretty spendy so it was easiest that way.

I think that kind of restaurant is just fine, lol. Red Robin, Applebee's, Olive Garden, etc is where everyone went for dinner for dances in our town, is that not the norm?

AK, right? H and his friends did the same, the local Chinese (downstairs)/sushi (upstairs) place that he had been going all of his life.

Yep, Alaska and a tiny island at that. The downtairs was the entrance/kitchen and the upstairs was just one big room with seating. It was in a little house right on the creek and we did a lot of our special dinners there.
I'm so glad our prom included dinner on location (International Market Square) otherwise we would have totally ended up at Buffalo Wild Wings.
I had prom at International Market Square too but I'm pretty sure there is no dinner option. If there is nobody uses it. Everyone went out to eat. We went to a restaurant downtown but I can't remember the name. I only went senior year.
Prom is expensive! The tickets, dress, flowers, limo, after party, etc. I can't fault them for trying to save some money on the dinner portion.

Not went I went to prom.
Maybe things have changed?
*shakes cane*
Lol. I'm 28. Maybe your town had more to offer than ours, too!
We ate supper at our high school in the gym decorated for prom that was prepared by our parents. There were no restaurants to go to. Then we went and did a parade in front of the town in the big gym while the tables were removed for the dance.
Our formals/proms were always held at like a banquet hall or golf course, etc., which included our dinner. This is kind of interesting. We were once at Chile's on our way home from a road trip and were surprised to see prom-goers out for dinner, but I guess we are the "regional" odd ones out.
Oh for heaven's sake. It's odd to wear a tux to a place where your silverware comes wrapped together in a paper napkin and the people in the next booth are in sweats. Tuxes and fancy updos go with the opera and canapes. Not some MLB game on TV and all you can drink gingerale. It looks kinda funny and out of place EVEN THOUGH it may make outstanding financial sense and be normal and expected for prom.
Let's not get all "ewww and your class warfare judgment" like some people are.

Yeah, but teenagers aren't normal people. Their teenagers. Either they did it because they don't know better, they dont' care, or they enjoy the weird aspect to it.

OMG, I cringe at the places H and I thought were fancy when we started dating in our early 20's. LOFL. Red Lobster and Rainforest Cafe was fucking FANCY. I about died when he dropped $100 for our dinner one night. It is what is it. It's sweet.
See... I'm not judging this AT ALL. They're teenagers! lol They have no idea.
Yes. But that doesn't make it look any less unusual. I didn't see the OP saying "if you cheapass motherfuckers aren't eating at a place surrounded by other tuxes and captains of industry you may as well stay home from prom." I saw an affectionate reaction to some kids looking out of place. That's no more judgment-judgment than when everyone looks at the bride and groom taking photos in the town square where some kid was just eating a popsicle in grimy shorts because "aww" and "hee, funny!"
It's one thing to observe that kids in formal attire look out of place (anywhere, I'd argue...) in a sports bar. It's another to say they should aim higher. (Wtf?)
I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone. Maybe I'm the only person who saw the smiley face.
Or who went to the moderately fancier, still inexpensive, restaurant because I wanted not to go to Pizzeria Uno for prom.
