Dogs and kids

So our beloved kitty had to be put down several weeks ago. It was awful and still really hard all day here without him. I don't want another cat bc none will be as great as him but am looking to get a dog eventfully. Has anyone adopted a dog after having kids? I'm pretty anti-breeder so will have to be super picky in adopting a dog. Any suggestions? I found the perfect one but he spent this past weekend with a family so guessing he's getting adopted. Best places to look? Petfinder? I really don't want a puppy but an adult preferably so my wish list is long....

i haven't done it after kids, but a lot of shelters have sign up lists for certain breeds, etc that you can be part of a mailing list when someone comes up that meets your needs. otherwise, just keep looking, and try not to be open minded because the dogs are so loyal once they know who their family is.
