Because DD's assigned seat is in a different row and it's a middle seat so I guess no one will be switching with us. Which is fine with me, I don't need to sit by her

I've had airlines switch seats all the time.
But seriously, when you go to check in, I'm sure they will try to fix the seating issue. On our flight to Seattle I was in a row with both kids and my husband was in a row behind us (but the bathroom was in between). The NICEST gate person saw us and inquired about our seating. While our previous arrangement was okay, she made sure to switch it so that my husband was in the same row (across the aisle) and switched one of the kids to his area. She also blocked off the other seats in our rows so we could spread out (it wasn't a full flight). I'm sure they will help you guys out, especially with how cute your kids are.
In all seriousness, how does this happen? Why don't you pick your seats when you buy the tickets and make sure you're next to your child???
In all of my flying, I have never had an airline switch my seat on me, even when I intentionally choose seats by colleagues or DH.
We couldn't pick seats until check in (not sure why). And I realized that out of the 5 of us ticketed together none of us are sitting next to each other (one set is in the same row on different sides of the aisle).
That's happened to us a few times; we just always request to be seated near each other (not all three of us, but at least one with DS) at the gate before boarding. Nobody's ever had an issue with it.
