What the Hell? Abortion and black lives matter?!?!

Has anyone else seen this around. It popped up today on twitter and I was all, WHAT?!?!

I google and it goes back to Matt.Wals.h's blog which I don't want to give any links to.

Who is behind this campaign?

 

It was hastaged "blacklivesmatter" and "blacktwitter" but put on there by some white dude.

I don't doubt that there is some historical context, that I should probably learn more about. But it looks like it's being used on twitter by this white dude and in that terrible guy's blog to say, stop worrying your heads over the criminal black people who the police are killing and worry more about all the black babies being killed by your own people.  It makes my stomach churn when I saw in that context.

Omg I was recently going to post about an old FB friend.

He was a really good friend in hs and decided to join the clergy. He said some fucked up stuff ablut abortion so I defriended him several years back.

I saw he posted a comment on a friends post so I went his wall to see what he was up to. He's still really catholic but not a priest.

Anyway, he must've posted after the Michael Brown decision because he said something the the effect of "I agree with decision. What we need to focus on is black on black crime. Also the real problem is the fact that more black people die from abortion than anything else. Why is no one talking about that?"

Even though I'm no longer friends with him I almost dropped a FUCK YOU.

This isn't new.  I saw a billboard along these lines ages ago down in Atlanta along Route 20.

This also explains why one of the people I follow on Twitter was on a rant about "don't you dare use #blacklivesmatter."  I couldn't figure out what she was talking about, but I'm guessing it's this.

Oh, that image and it's purpose is vile. But in using that idea they are stomping all over some incredibly nuanced arguments from black intellectuals. It makes it even more vile and even more dangerous.

also, if you delve into the history of abortion legislation, it was about making sure there were enough white babies to counteract all the new brown and Black babies threatening to take over Amurica.

I'm going to need to see this expounded on a bit, because I'm aware of this argument, but my understanding of it is as a false and grossly disingenuous claim by prolifers who attempt to suggest the race issue in abortion is the proportion of AA fetuses that are aborted and NOT the proportion of AA women who cannot access standard reproductive health care (such as birth control) because of the very laws put in place by the people pretending to care about race and abortion.

Slightly off-topic but if you haven't read Killing the Black Body by Dorothy Roberts, you should. I don't remember if she touches in this specific issue, but she does assess why these arguments are powerful to some in the black population given the history of forced sterilization and eugenics attempts.

I've also seen this argument before from white people who never before cared about black lives.

If (big If) you buy the premise that abortions are killing, then isn't it likely also true that abortion is the number one killer of white people? Just food for thought.

So are these folks, with their earnest concerns about black life, secretly in it to save the white babies or are they just too privileged/racist to realize that white people get pregnant on accident too?
