I've wondered the same thing. It is so much cheaper than other airlines!
I'm wary of layovers in Russia though. Because of their visa situation I think you are fucked if you get stuck there. Like you can't leave the secure area of the airport or something crazy*
*im not really sure where I got this idea from, it's possible I just made it up haha.
The biggest downside is, obviously, the increased travel time. The other bad thing was that you get one glass of wine with dinner, that's it. No other booze on the flight. The food and general service were both fine.
The best part was that neithet of the transatlantic flights were very full. On the way back I got a seat in the rear of the plane and had a row to myself, as did everyone else.

I would have a 16 hour layover, which would not require a visa to leave the airport provided I had tickets and an itinerary showing my next flight. That's my understanding anyway.
I think you need a transit visa to leave the airport but i am not positive. My longer layover was 6 hours so it didn't matter.
Getting toasted on "free" flight drinks is the best part of international travel!
They made 4-5 announcements each flight about how you can't drink outside alcohol on the plane. I was quite amused that the Russian airline was so anti-booze.
I don't pay full price for anything but shelling out for a reputable airline seems like the best idea As I get older when you consider that I am trusting them to take me 35k feet up trapped in a tin can.
by why does it matter at your age? you're practically dead.

We flew it in 2004 when we adopted our boys…..from Moscow to Saratov. It was kind of a trip.. the plane was big but the seats flopped around and folded down like a minivan's back seats. Things rattled and it was kind of unnerving but we all survived. Many of the folks on the plane were drunk and kind of loudish/unruly. Randomly I do remember that the "lunch" was actually way better than I expected. I just remember my "afraid of nothing" H had some big eyes -- looking around and taking it all in. Now its just a fun story….I'm sure your flight will be great!
