I know we have quite a few BF moms on here, hopefully someone can help. I also posted this on the BF board.
DS has started his head back while still latched. Sometimes he unlatches when he does this, sometimes he doesn't. Either way it hurts.
Any idea why he would be doing this & how to get him to stop. Right now I hold my hand behind his head so he has room to move & adjust but can't pull back so far that it hurts.
He always does it when he's really alert, so I think he's just trying to look around. I don't think it's a sign that he wants to stop because if he unlatches he quickly moves his head closer & relatches himself.
Sounds like he's distracted. Try nursing in a quiet boring room. Or if he does it, take him off and put him down and say no pulling. If he wants to keep nursing he can't pull away. He'll learn it pretty fast. Same thing you do when they bite you when they are older. Say no biting and take them off and put them down.
my son does this. When he does it I put my breast away for a minute so that he can't automatically relatch. I also try to choose places to nurse that are not distracting.

NIPLASH n. [Fr. nipple + whiplash]: When a baby decides not to take a break from nursing and suddenly and energetically jerks her head around to look up down and all around the room (still firmly latched onto your boob).

Glad to hear I'm not alone. It's usually when we get home in the evenings so I think he's just excited to see me & DH. I'll try to minimize distractions, thanks ladies
