I've been watching that story with a sinking feeling and hadn't been online today until just now. I'm really sorry. Not to say that it matters what the mission is, but it bothers me even more to see it happening with a humanitarian mission. I realize that's a problem with first responders in the states, even, but it still bothers me a lot.
I'm sorry that it's hitting your household so hard. You have every right to be upset.
Its really scary for me, right now the community is really saddened and worried. My H recently got to that area, and is going to be flying in that area as well, and i feel so selfish, but that REALLY has me worried.
I'm so sorry. Not sure about Marine Corps traditions, but in Air Force flying squadrons we raise a glass (ie: get absolutely sloshed) when we lose people in flying accidents. I've lost quite a few friends, and it never gets easier. Booze helps numb the pain some.
I'm just tired of aviation accidents. I'm sure you are too.
I concur. They've been in my peripheral vision ever since the F/A-18 from Miramar in 2008. I was at work at UCSD that day and it was a pretty big deal. I'm always hearing about how safe commercial aviation is but in the back of my mind every single time I'm thinking about military aviation.
It also bugs me to hear about fuel problems because right now DH is running a fuel depot and it happens every now and then that he gets accused of giving someone bad fuel so he goes and he runs all his tests and so far it's never been his fault. But I always wonder why so many vessels and aircraft seem to come up with tainted fuel all the time. Seems like it should be avoidable.
It's just a terrible experience; being a part of the community, you hold your breath until the names are announced and if you don't recognize them, there's a split second of relief followed by hours, days or regret at your relief and sorrow for the ones who didn't get that split second.
H got tagged in a status talking about getting a drink. He's not in a command that ever takes a breath (recruiting). I don't need to drink, I met the kid once. Im not even trying to be a drama whore. I'm just tired of aviation accidents. I'm sure you are too.
You don't have to be close to those involved to be saddened/angry/otherwise affected by these types of accidents, or to take part in honoring their memory and their service (in whatever personal way works for you) . It sucks. It absolutely sucks. And yep, I'm tired of it too. You're not being a drama whore at all.

In that part of the world, a lot of the fuel comes from Russia or other former soviet states. They don't have the quality control we have. And sometimes it's not EXACTLY the same kind of fuel we use (it's just "close enough"). The trucks that bring the fuel to the area aren't always great either, and sometimes the fuel gets contaminated (even water from condensation can cause problems). And a lot of the truck drivers who transport the fuel are under tremendous pressure, and sometimes people steal fuel from them (and replace the missing fuel with some other kind of liquid, different/cheaper type of fuel, contaminated fuel, whatever).

Sorry I'm like a week late I was out of town. That's interesting. I know DH has foreign nationals working for him right now, but I didn't think about all that.
