I just got back from the farmer's market as DH and DD were on their way out to a birthday party and DS was waking up from his nap. And DH ate the $#%^ing overnight oats I had made to give DS today.
RAGE! He's on his way to a birthday party where there will surely be lunch and I'm scrambling to figure out what I can make quickly for DS before I get him out of the crib. I think I need to start doing crazy roommate stuff like labeling stuff in the fridge "do not eat."
After 1 too many "omg why did you eat that I needed it for x" freak outs I made a shelf on the fridge where I put leftovers/stuff that is fair game for DH. If it's not there he double checks that it's ok to eat.
I label anything that is for a specific kid with their name. Part of this is due to allergies and so our sitter knows what she can give to each kid, but another part is so H doesn't eat it.
Why do husbands think it is okay to just eat whatever they want at any given time? And why does my h have to snack more often the kids?
My H started to finish off a plate of baked sweet potato slices I'd made for the baby the other day. He was like, "well she didn't eat them all so I figured it was ok." But dude, she will eat them tomorrow!
While I would also rage at H eating something for the baby I have to say I don't understand the concept of overnight oats? I just buy quick oats (not the packaged stuff, just whole oats) and put them in the microwave with equal amounts oats and water for like 45 seconds. And then add milk. Takes about 2 minutes total to prep. What is the benefit of overnight oats?
Variety. What's the benefit of anything I cook for myself or my family?
Eta: and good for you, I guess, if you don't get really excited about finding a new recipe and trying it out?
@jennyanddots, I don't really know what to say. If you're happy with the way you make oats, don't mess with it. I'm a huge fan of baked oatmeal and thought overnight oats might be a fun way to switch things up. I mean, DS will also eat plain old roasted sweet potato chunks, but sometimes I will make him sweet potato pancakes instead, just because I get bored of prepping and eating things the same way myself.

Ok, maybe I just don't understand what overnight oats are? This is something that cook overnight in the slow cooker? I guess I just don't know how they differ from making oatmeal in the microwave for much less time. Just wondering if they taste better or something?
And this isn't meant to be targeted at you, specifically. I have seen overnight oats referenced lots of places lately and have been meaning to ask about them.
You put rolled oats in milk and/or yogurt, mix in some fruit, and let it sit overnight, then eat cold the next morning. I like to add a little almond or vanilla extract and some crushed nuts. It's great for the hot months. @mrswindycity has a great recipe if you're interested and want solid amounts for everything.
I would like to thank @jennyanddots for asking that question repeatedly. I also never "got" overnight oats, but now I do & it's like a whole new world!

I know! And then he wonders why the grocery budget is so high...
YES! OMG! Dh, stop drinking ds1's $4 bottles of hidden veggies juice or stop complaining about me being $10 over budget every week because I have to buy 5 litres of it to get through 7 days. DRINK THE DAMN TAP WATER LIKE I DO!

I have always been a person that when i'm really hungry I get CRANKY! When I was pregnant with my first, I developed hyperthyroidism. So, i'm pregnant , hyperthyroid and HUNGRY all the time! One night I made extra dinner and put the leftovers into two different tupperware containers so we could each bring one to work. My husband left before me and when I went to get my leftovers they were gone. I called him and asked where they were. Apparently he dumped my container into his container and took them to work. I was RAGING! He said he didn't know I was going to take them, but obviously if I put them in two containers I didn't mean for you to eat both! We were also on a strict budget b/c we knew it was likely i'd be on bedrest at some point so I couldn't just get something for lunch. He was terrified to eat anything in the fridge for months!
Recently I made mashed potatoes to go with my dinner. I made them earlier in the day b/c we had sports that night and i knew I wouldn't have time. I LOVE mashed potatoes and the meal I made to go with it I only like with mashed potatoes (I have weird food issues). When I got home I pull out the container and there is one spoonful of mashed potatoes left. Not my finest moment but I threw the tupperware that had the one spoonful left across the kitchen I was so mad and then went to sulk in the other room, ha. I don't think he'll ever eat my mashed potatoes again either...

If I don't want DH to eat something I: - tell him - put a post it on it - put it in the specific containers I use for DD's lunch
Maybe that makes us like roommates. And, yes, occasionally I'm still disappointed if DH eats the last of something and I didn't specifically reserve it but was looking forward to it. But that's on me, not him.
(Anna, this isn't directed at you. Just...how are they supposed to know if we don't tell them?)
momof2boys, I am DYING at the image of your H dumping the two containers together. Like what the hell was he even thinking? Lololol.
Lol, clearly he wasn't thinking! Do NOT mess with a pregnant, hyperthyroid persons food! He seriously was terrified to eat anything out of the fridge for months after that, ha. I'm pretty sure he feared for his life...and with good reason

Omg Tupperware throwing justified! What a dunce!
Thank you! I will admit as I was doing it I realized I was being a bit dramatic, but seriously! I told my coworkers the next day and all but one thought it was hysterical. I'm pretty sure the one who didn't now thinks i'm insane. The rest of us texted pics of mashed potatoes memes back and forth for several days, ha.

Not good enough! I demand an explanation!! JK, sorry for interrogating you about overnight oats, I don't think I understood what they were.
I thought they were just plain oats that you cooked in the slow cooker all night, which I didn't understand why people would choose to do that rather than microwave. darnkatz - your explanation helps - that method makes sense and I google-imaged some and they look pretty yummy!
I cook Irish Oats or Rolled Oats in the microwave, too. But my favorite are Steel Cut oats slow cooked in the crock, overnight. You can't microwave Steel Cut oats - they aren't processed enough. They need an old fashioned, slow cook, for many hours.
I like the the texure and taste. And I make a big batch - so I put them in individual containers and reheat, in the microwave, for 3 more mornings. Lol.

Yeah but the dumping the two together is bad. Plus common sense is how they should know. I'm not my husband's mom.
FML!!!! I left last night's dinner in the oven all night, instead of sticking the leftovers in the fridge so we could have them for lunch today. And it's a holiday, so DD is home and needs to be fed lunch, too. (But hey, at least I got 3 loads of laundry done and some work done, too, after the kids went to bed last night, even I forget about the food left in the oven?)

I wish my husband would find food in the fridge. He likes leftovers and has them for work lunches, but they have to go on a special shelf in the freezer.
I quit buying many things for him, because even though he likes them, he can't seem to find them in the fridge or the pantry.
