Best way to find a contractor?

I am having a hell of a time finding a contractor to do the structural work that we need to do on our soon-to-be-nursery. I have a list of names from the BBB. Suggestions for finding someone? We need to get this done before it is super hot in July. TIA!!!

Have you been asking around for recommendations? That was how I found ours. I tried to find some online & through BBB, but it was hard! Sorry that's not much help though.. good luck!

DH and I asked co-workers, friends and our realtor for recommendations. The we looked them up on Angie's list. Dh is meeting the second one tonight.

I admit that I joined Angie's List just for that purpose (contractor). I took the top 3 or 4 best rated and called for estimates, then picked the one I liked the most.

We had to hire out some work this spring (electrical, tree surgery), and we found our guys through a combination of recommendations from people at work, our local town paper, and the internet. Hiring work out was super frustrating.

I found mine by recs from family members and then checked their reviews online as well. I was tempted to joing Angie's List but didn't want to pay for it.

I am just commiserating. In addition to word of mouth and internet/BBB, can I just complain for a moment how hard it is to actually find people who want to do the work? We would have people who never returned calls (and we are in the process of prepping for a major renovation), or they would come out and meet with us, act all chummy, and never follow-up with a written proposal. Hang in there and keep asking around and you will find just the right person - good luck!
