What kinds of family oriented shows do you feel comfortable watching with your children today. I feel as if there were numerous shows in the 70's, 80's and 90's that were geared toward family (Cosby, Family Ties, Different Strokes, Family Matters, Reba, Growing Pains etc) It does seem that there are no new shows to fill this niche (or maybe I'm just not aware) My kids are 7 but they are still very happy with Nick Jr, PBS kids and Disney Jr. What sitcom type shows are on now that aren't too inappropriate for young school age kids?
We stick to the TVchannel and the classics. There really isn't a *lot* nowadays for family viewing until the family is a little older, imo (I like Glee but I'm certainly not comfortable with the 6 and 8 year olds watching it, ykwim?)

E and M are only 2 1/2 and are in bed by 7:30, but I think Modern Family would be fine. Right now our world revolves around Elmo, Super Why! and Word World, so I'm not sure what will be appropriate when they are older and staying up a bit later.
DS loves America's Funniest Home Videos (he'll be 6 in November) and a lot of Animal Planet and Nat Geo Wild shows. Not all of them are probably age-appropriate though. But he loves Call of the Wildman and Turtleman is his hero. Sigh. He also still loves some of the Nick Jr shows like Bubble Guppies.

TV shows are kind of sucky anymore for families. E still prefers cartoons (and Noah likes things like Pawn Stars, Swamp People and the history channel) but some shows that we have all watched together are Wipeout and Survivor.

They don't watch a ton of T.V. but when we all watch something it's usually something on Nat Geo, History, Discovery, or Food Network. I can't really think of a family-friendly sitcom. Sometimes they will be in the room while we're watching Big Bang Theory and they seem interested in it (they think Sheldon is hilarious) but I wouldn't call it family-friendly. There's quite a bit of sex talk.
Keira especially loves Food Network/Cooking channel shows. Cambria loves to watch movies with H, Lord of the Rings, superhero movies, Star Wars/Star Trek, etc.
Joaquin's favorite show is Big Bang Theory. 'bang' was probably her 3rd or 4th word. Stellar parenting! She'll watch the crap out of soccer too, and apparently loves diving. We also (RIVERSONG DON'T READ THIS) downloaded a bunch of episodes of Blues Clues and she loves them... she finds roughly every other clue and gets super proud. We've been looking for Mr Rogers too, but can't find a valid torrent.

I can't think of any sitcom type shows that we would watch as a family. We do sometimes watch Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune together, and we watch a lot of the Food Network and the History Channel. In fact, the other day DD was playing Chopped with her playdoh. She counted down the final seconds and served me blue sausage with cabbage in a marshmallow sauce.
Honestly, I can't think of one that I would watch with my 7 year old. Aside from America's Funniest Videos and maybe Extreme home makeover. All these sitcoms seem pretty mature these days. Definetely not the days of TGIF. This is really sad.
See this is what I have been thinking but I was wondering if I was just being too much of an old fuddy duddy.
I have never seen a full episode of Modern Family, but it seems inappropriate for children under 13 or so. I get the same vibe from what little I have seen of The Big Bang Theory. It seems like every show is hyper sexualized. I watch Glee but I don't think that show is appropriate for children at all. Maybe 15/16 and up. It sucks because the music is so fun and great, but they story lines are SO sexual. It's just too much! Ahhhh I feel so OLD. I used to sit on my father's lap and watch The Cosby Show with the whole family. I hate that the only shows availible for the family are realtiy shows (American Idol, Dancing with the Stars) even those are questionable because they try to sensationalize them. Have you ever seen the clips where the participants are bleeped out when they are trying to lean a new dance? It is so annoying! Edit that out entirely!!! Remember Star Search? That was just respectable programming. AI judges cut people down. I don't like it. :N:
We don't really watch sitcoms and stuff and Rocco's only 3 so hell watch PBS kids and sometimes Disney jr. We have a bunch of cirque du soleil shows taped and he loves that stuff. Also, there is one Pavarotti Great Performances taped that he loves. He has a bit of the flare for the dramatic, that one. Lol Also, any animal show really grabs his attention.

lWe don't have too much together TV. We watch Ninja Warrior. She is a big fan of Cops. I use it as a teaching tool. Other than that, Nick Jr and Hub. She likes Nick because she likes iCarly and Victoriuus, but they can get a little grown up now and then. And anyway I'M STILL MAD AT NICK. KATY PERRY.
We also watch a lot of Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy. DS loves American Pickers and that show is pretty vanilla. I have tried to put on Deadliest Catch or Pawn Stars, but they sometimes have inappropriate language. I definitely hear you on the lack of appropriate shows. The other thing that annoys me is the over the top scary horror movie commercials that they play during evening hours and with Halloween coming up, it will be more frequent. Not cool.
I don't let my kids come home from school and sit in front of the tv for hours or anything. They have to do homework, chores, active playing first, but we definitely do some tv....and it's daily.
they are 13, 12, 10 & 8. by the time they get home from school, get homework & chores done, they play outside for at least 30 minutes each day, we eat dinner, they read for an hour (as per their teachers requests) then they shower and go to bed. and those are nights they don't have scouts or karate. the oldest 2 don't even get off the bus until 5pm. there simply isn't time for TV.
besides, on the weekends when they are at their biological mothers house, we believe all they do is watch TV nonstop, at least it seems that way based on what they tell us

How about during the summer or school breaks? They don't watch anything??? I'm not judging, I just wonder how people fill the entire day without even a 30 minute TV break. We are a TV household though, so there's that.

We really only watch Wipeout and America's Funniest Home Videos with my 8 year old. The rest of the sitcoms/shows make me uncomfortable with him around
. How on earth do you ever get a meal on the table?
easy, my dh does most of the cooking while I go over school papers and stuff the kids bring home. each day 1 of the kids helps with dinner. we all sit down and eat together as a family 4 nights a week, which of course takes longer than it probably should

during the summer, the visitation schedule flips and they are with their biological mother mon-fri. on the weekend in the summer, we are too busy to sit and watch TV. these kids really love being outside and we dont' discourage it. during school breaks, that time split with bm too, so thats when we plan fun stuff to do on our time, like vacations to grandmas, etc

They probably don't hate being at your house. Just kidding! They totally do!
no, actually, they are always very happy to be home. life at their mothers house is not that great, which is why a judge took them away from her and only gave her visitation

being in a very child oriented neighborhood, where families trust their kids to be outside and be kids and having a pool doesn't hurt either. they don't ask to watch tv, they would rather be out on their bikes, swimming or playing on the cul de sac with the neighborhood kids. it is actually pretty easy to fill the day.

my husband and I aren't much on tv either. we will watch football on sundays, but the kids are usually not here on sundays during football season
