This was pretty good.
Also I think people need to recognize the following:
In fact, this describes the vast majority of African Americans, who average three-quarters African and one-quarter European DNA nationally
You guys know the way society turns a blind eye to the systemic rape of slaves really pisses me off. As hard as is was to watch, I am glad 12 years a slave tried to address it.
I have a friend who refers to herself as Mulatto. She's Haitian though and iammalcolmx told me back in the day (and friend later confirmed) that it's because of the culture in which she grew up and how her experience was completey different as a mixed race Haitian with a French passport than it was for a lot of other people in the country.

You know they call me Mulatto in Brasil, it makes me twitch.

Hmmm...made me think. I will still probably never say it and if I hear it, correct that (99.9999% chance) white person that nope, they can't say that either.

I have a friend who could have written this. He really doesn't like the other terms used to describe his racial makeup, and seems to be about trying to reclaim "mulatto" in a very intentional way.
He's also gay, and a college professor, so he has a lot of interesting identity stuff going on.
oh, and he collects zebras. (eta: not ACTUAL zebras, he's not a hunter... figurines and zebra art)
I don't need mulatto reclaimed. No thank you. I'll just be biracial right over here. Now he can call himself mulatto and that's all well and good, just like some folks refer to themselves and others as the n-word. But nope, not cosigning that fuckery and the fact that he wants to call other people mulatto makes me want to punch him a little.
I am a product of history whether people realize it or not and I don't need to refer to myself by some shitty ass racially loaded word to daily remind people.
Also, I don't understand why he wants to associate with a word that he acknowledges most likely indicated the non-consenting relationship between a white man and a black woman. Why do all that?

While I am not biracial, these were my thoughts as well. And do we every really reclaim a word? I don't think so. It just makes racist people think it is now ok to say in mixed company. No thanks.
And then meshaliu punches people. No good can come of this!
My husband refers to himself as such. It drives me crazy, but I think its his was of acknowledging that he has a white parent since he doesn't look mixed. There is other stuff going on there also (adopted and doesn't know his bio-parents; parents who raised him are both AA). He also refers to himself as colored.
I agree with meshaliu that I'd hurt anybody who called my kids quadroons.
