Any Minecraft experts?

My six-year-old plays Minecraft on the iPad -- I guess it's the Mobile version?  His fervent wish is to spawn a wolf, but he only has spawn eggs for chickens, cows, and sheep.  Is there something you need to do to get the egg that spawns the wolf?  I've been searching the Minecraft wikis and the closest I could find is that eggs are available for any mobs that are "activated" but I don't know how to activate a wolf mob, if that is indeed the problem.  Any advice?

Is he in the right biome? Taiga is the best option. He can tame them with bones once they spawn, then breed them.

He should either be in the forest or like panicked said one of the taiga biodomes

ETA- Apparently some of the forums for the pocket edition said to walk into the tall pine trees and he should find some

I don't even know what that means.  If he creates a new world, does it let him pick his biome?  The only thing I remember it asking is if he wants to play in Survival or Creative mode, but to be honest he's mostly already in his world poking sheep and making lava so I haven't messed with the settings much.   :-)  He always plays in Survival mode, so that's not the problem.  The world he's usually is has a lot of grass and water, and some mountains.  He can make trees, but I haven't seen a lot of forests.

ETA:  Oops, I meant he always plays in CREATIVE mode.

Thanks everyone! Nothing was working, and then I realized that every time I was trying to update the app version it just opened it instead. So, with the kiddo's permission I deleted the app and redownloaded it, and now we have the version with wolves. :-) He lost all of the worlds he had built, but he's so over-the-moon excited about wolves and spiders and slendermen and slime that he doesn't even care.

And apparently there's a new update today with bats and squid and I may never have a full conversation with my son again. :-)
