I leave on Sunday to go back to the US. We will be there for one year and then returning back to South Africa (most likely ). We're storing most of our stuff but i'm struggling to pack just 3 suitcases for a whole year for me and the baby. I need to do some serious editing tomorrow. WWILD?
1. Get rid of baby toys and books? 2. Totally purge wardrobe? (I was trying to really minimize and update my wardrobe lately) 3. Screw it and pay $100 in overweight baggage (giving 40 extra pounds).

Probably not helping, but would it be possible to pack and ship some of the stuff? If not, I'd probably do a mix of 1 and 2, especially if I wanted to reduce wardrobe anyway. Are you moving somewhere with different weather? If so, may need new clothing anyway. Baby books are pretty cheap, I'd just pack a few favorites. As for toys, I might pack a few if baby loved them and/or would not likely find them in the states.
If you're thinking of purging your wardrobe anyway, then go ahead and do that before you go. You can buy a few things there to flesh it out if need be.
And I'd only get rid of toys/books that aren't used. If you go through everything and it's still over the limit, I'd just suck it up and pay the fee.
I would pay for the extra bag. Although that will cost a few bucks, re-buying stuff will cost more. I would aim to bring anything that I thought I would have to re-purchase.
Thanks. Ended up taking a little bit of everything out. Happy to dump some more clothes and selected the better books and toys. We'll be moving around quite a bit in the US so it's better in the end to travel light.
Now I'm off for a 30+ hour trip with a 22 month old! Gulp!
