It's the first time since Affirmed in 1978 that a horse has won the triple crown. It's so exciting! I wasn't sure if I would ever see it in my lifetime. I remember so many years thinking it might happen and it never did.
I grew up in Louisville so it's something I've always followed.
I honestly wanted to watch, but I watched one last year (for the first time, apparently, I don't even know which one it was) and was horrified when the horses got to the finish line. I just couldn't watch.

I am seriously so excited about this. I'm such a dork. But j used to obsess over the yearly derby cups and look at the ones who had the triple crown symbol. And now there will finally be another one!
I'm so happy. California Chrome's owner really rubbed me the wrong way, so I was glad that horse didn't win. Everyone associated with thus horse is much more likeable, so I'm really happy for the win
I am so happy about this. My grandfather worked at a horse track his entire working career - 15 years old until he retired as the CEO - and American Pharaoh is his favorite this year. I'm so glad he was able to see another horse earn the Triple Crown.
That was pretty amazing. It was fun to hear how excited the announcer's voice got on that NBC video when it became clear that American Pharoah would pull it off

I just watched the replay and boy did American Pharaoh dominate!
My uncle is convinced there were shady dealings going on to limit it to such a small field in the first place. I know very little; what is a normal field size for this race? Isn't it often smaller than the derby due to its length?

Why horrified? Just curious.
I had no idea they beat the horses like that near the finish. I'd never seen a horse race before. I don't think I'm overly sensitive, but when I watched last year, I was pretty horrified.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's totally awesome and exciting to have a Triple Crown, I just can't watch it.

Oh, yeah - that makes sense to me.
The horses may love to run, but they are bred to make money for sure, not to be happy.
I could be wrong, but it seems to me the field gets smaller as the triple crown races go on. I think sometimes it's not worth the risk to owners for injury or whatever if they didn't win the earlier races or weren't doing well. There are also usually other horses that didn't race in the previous races which is kind of unfair in a way.
