I looked around and ultimately decided to go with a PC/game controller set up. My laptop is dying a slow death hooked up to my TV, so this way, I'll still have all that capability, with a fast enough system to play games (laptop is too clunky). So yay!
I still think Microsoft is dumb dumb dumb for not allowing backward gaming. Ugh.

It's not just Microsoft; Sony's PS3 games aren't compatible with the PS4 either. Backwards compatibility between consoles actually has HUGE technical implications. Not only is the hardware different (such as in the way it reads and process the games), but the underlying software is completely different as well.
Trust me when I say this issue came up all the time during the Xbox One development cycle, and I'm sure it came up at Sony as well. No one wants to alienate their established customer base, but they also have to work within harsh time and money constraints.
It probably doesn't help you now but it was announced today at E3 that XBOX One will be backwards compatible now.
DH and I watched a youtube video either on Geek and Sundry or Nerdist that said it will only be on select games. We have been holding out on buying a xbox one due to cost and the backwards compatible, but I hope maybe they will eventually make it so all of the games with be backwards compatible.
