Our house is currently builder's beige throughout. Literally. It was a foreclosure that was "neutralized" and I am over the blah color.
Our dining room gets a LOT of sun (faces south). It has white wainscoting, light tan carpet, and a huge set of windows. We have a cherry hutch and table/chairs. I know a picture would help and I'll try to take one later when the sun comes up.
I am seriously considering an eggplant color for the walls. DH didn't baulk at the idea (shocking), but I am nervous about such a drastic color change. My furniture is much more traditional, but here is an inspiration picture I found:
So, do I dare???
UPDATE: Here are a couple of photos of the room (ignore the sewing planning station currently on the dining room table--it's tracing day!) The samples look a little washed out in this photo--it is hard to balance light in that room with the windows. DH like the top color. I would like to go a little darker, but am not sure...decisions decisions!
Painting a dark color is totally a PITA. We did black in my family room and deep teal in my Master (pretty sure you already saw those pics on the other board). Time consuming and labor intensive...BUT SO WORTH IT!! I love that eggplant color. What color are you going to use as an accent? If you decide to go with a complimentary color, drapes in a deep red or warm gold look amazing with that color and might help to break it up.
My initial thought is yes. I wanted to paint our hall doors the same color and it would have happened except H was too chicken and thought white would be best.
Do you have the woodwork in your room too?( I forgot what that half-room panelling is called). I think its a great color, but if you're unsure you could paint a couple cheapy canvases from michaels and hang em/ move em around to see if it suits you.
I agree - it's only paint. Do what you love! If it doesn't work out, re-painting is always an option. I was able to cover a dark red in two coats (no primer) with a lighter color in our living room using Benjamin Moore. Good luck!

I love it!i have a similar dining room with wainscoting and it is painted chocolate brown. I think with lots of light and the white wainscoting you can pull it Off. I'll see if I can post a pic
Definitely do it! I don't think repainting over dark colors is too terribly bad. I went from navy blue to a medium blue/grey in our master with two coats of paint+primer.
I like the top two paint colors. The third down is way too light, and the bottom is pretty purple, whereas the top two have more grey in them to make them seem more sophisticated colors, rather than "Barney" haha.

We are defintely NOT going for Barney--though it would probably delight my three-year old!

I think eggplant would look amazing in that room. One question though - Does your dining room set have reddish undertones (cherry?). If it's a nice neutral or cool brown, I'm all for it. If the furniture is a reddish or warm tone, it may look a bit off with such a strong cool color. Hard for me to tell the true color of the wood from the pictures though.
I love the inspiration picture you posted! I think you should go for it; it will look gorgeous! Especially with the white wainscoting on the bottom. We did dark gray in our dining room and I just love it! (but ours was dark gray under the chair rail with a medium gray on top).
